I'd love it if the captain in DSC turns out to be Garth, but it would be kind of a downer ending - knowing what will eventually happen to him.
And THAT is the curse of all prequels, no matter how artfully done.
If the captain's English again there'd be space rationing, and new space towns.
I will never get this. We're all going to die. Very few of us will meet a graceful end, either. Everybody voids their bowels in the end.
Yeah, but right now you don't know how or when you are going to die and whether or not you'll be wearing a diaper to make the aftermath a little easier on everyone else...
Some times the story is about the journey not the destination. Knowing the end doesn't make the story less worthwhile.
It's one story, so villain fatigue shouldn't set in. That said, other than the Klingons and the Sheliak (yeah right), the possibilities include the Orions, rogue Andorians, all sorts of Enterprise aliens, Tholians, anything they want make up.
Or, just maybe, the central story of Discovery won't focus on a singular enemy or a race of antagonists. It might be too much to ask for a story (in multiple parts) with stakes a bit different than open conflict between two or more parties.
When I go, I want to go by exploding my dying body over everyone in the ER, knowing that I, Spider, yes I, have the power to make 50 people spontaneously vomit.
I won't come close to Berman and Braga's record though.

Ha! Reminds me back in 1997 when people were arguing that James Cameron's Titanic was gonna sunk (pun intended) in the box office because "everyone knows how the movie ends"! (And it ends in a real downer.) Two billion dollars and 11 Oscars later… boy were they proven wrong!
I've heard talk that Nathan Fillion might be up for the role of the captain in DSC. I can TOTALLY see him playing Garth!

Seriously, the point stands. TITANIC didn't lack suspense or drama because we all knew the ship was going to sink in the end, in large part because we were invested with the characters of Jack and Rose and didn't know if they were going to survive or end up together or whatever.
Same with the new show. People will keep watching to find out what happens to Lt. Protagonist and her crew, and to see how they cope with whatever alien crisis or mystery they encounter, regardless of whether or not we all know that Romulus is going to blow up a hundred years later that the Klingons will eventually be our allies, etc. The future history of the Federation doesn't matter when it comes to getting caught up in a story set years earlier.
I mean, look at Indiana Jones. We all knew that the Nazis weren't going to win World War II, but that didn't make RAIDERS any less exciting.
