Space hippies. They never really expanded on the space hippies.
But if this is a decade before TOS, wouldn't they be space beatniks instead?

I'd love it if the captain in DSC turns out to be Garth, but it would be kind of a downer ending - knowing what will eventually happen to him.![]()
If the captain's English again there'd be space rationing, and new space towns. But if this is a decade before TOS, wouldn't they be space beatniks instead?
And THAT is the curse of all prequels, no matter how artfully done.
I will never get this. We're all going to die. Very few of us will meet a graceful end, either. Everybody voids their bowels in the end.

Some times the story is about the journey not the destination. Knowing the end doesn't make the story less worthwhile.Yeah, but right now you don't know how or when you are going to die and whether or not you'll be wearing a diaper to make the aftermath a little easier on everyone else...
This highlights another drawback of it being a prequel. The fact that this is set in that time frame really limits the potential number of major hostile alien races. Sure, you can have one-off stories with the alien villain of the week. But, in terms of species that regularly affect the power dynamic in the region, you're very limited in this time frame. It pretty much has to be the Klingons. So, it makes sense they have cast these characters.
A continuation would not have this restriction. We saw that as the franchise moved forward in time they added new adversarial species to keep things fresh: Ferengi, Borg, Cardassians, Dominion, etc.

I was hoping for Dana Carvey.I've heard talk that Nathan Fillion might be up for the role of the captain in DSC. I can TOTALLY see him playing Garth!
Ha! Reminds me back in 1997 when people were arguing that James Cameron's Titanic was gonna sunk (pun intended) in the box office because "everyone knows how the movie ends"! (And it ends in a real downer.) Two billion dollars and 11 Oscars later… boy were they proven wrong!
And the fact that mental health care should be a bit more advanced in the 23rd century. It would also be difficult to avoid mental health stereotypes and caricatures about the 'insane' that were fine for Star Trek and Batman in the 60s but would be seen badly these days. Doesn't seem like a trap Fuller would dive into willingly.
It would be fantastic. Space archaeology, like a Jack McDevitt novel.I'd love that.
I would love that.Space hippies. They never really expanded on the space hippies.
Golden Midgets. I've always wanted to know more about the Golden Midgets. It's one story, so villain fatigue shouldn't set in. That said, other than the Klingons and the Sheliak (yeah right), the possibilities include the Orions, rogue Andorians, all sorts of Enterprise aliens, Tholians, anything they want make up.
