Well as the title says it's time for the annual love fest that is known as Eurovision Song Contest this week. With the semi-finals taking plkace Tuesday and Thursday with the final taking place on Saturday. Of course this years contest has already had some politics come into re: Ukrainae and Russia. So will anyone be watching it?

It brings back bad memories so I won't be watching it. My dad died the day it was shown two years ago, I got very drunk while watching it, but still, I have no intention of watching it.

At most I'll tune in for the voting, but whilst Norton does his best, it's not been the same since Wogan stopped doing the commentary.

An an Australian I'm glad to see us get into the final even if the song isn't my favourite. It will be interesting if he goes for that high note again in the final.

There was a song that I quite liked. Belgium's. Her performance wasn't the most spectacular, but I like the song.

Definitely a big fan of the ESC. Although Belgium is one of my favourites too, I think Italy will win this year. Catchy song.

Dear God, Romania have entered a gorgeous blonde teenage yodeller with a bearded hipster rapping over her.

It's fantastically batshít and terrible to boot.

    It may win...

I love watching the Eurovision Song Contest, especially the semi-finals. My favourite this year is Kristian Kostov from Bulgaria. Interesting song and voice.

I have to admit that I also enjoyed watching Robin Bengtsson who represents Sweden. :alienblush:

This would have won it for the UK:

Bit cheesy, but the right sort of catchy, popy tune that normally wins. Steps have a HUGE gay following as well, which obviously helps with anything Eurovision related.

Just think it's been 20 years since the UK last had a winning song.

When did Steps become a thing again? Did I fall in a time portal?

Although I agree, that would have been a better entry. The problem with our selection process is that the British public choose the song they like. Sounds flawless until you remember they're the only people who can't vote for it. British tastes and Eurovision tastes don't really align.

^ I think it's a beautiful song, but I like the sound of her voice less when she performs live.

I agree that it is a catchy tune, but how well does this act translate to a stage? The quality of the performance is very important, as is the emotion it evokes.

I didn't like the music video of the Dutch entry at all, but seeing and hearing these three sisters sing live flawlessly about their mother who is dying, gave me goosebumps. It was the other way around for the Belgian entry.

Don't other countries choose the song in the same way though? But as you say perhaps it's just down to the fact that in other nations those songs are closer to what other countries like.

That's the key I think - the 'europop' songs that usually do well are more cross-border on the continent - there's more of a musical divide between us and the continent. Look at 'Despacito' which has taken Europe by storm but frankly has only made it onto our radio because Justin Bieber is attached, and it sounds like nothing else in our chart.

My music taste changes during Eurovision. One of my favourites this year is the entry from Armenia. Again, it's the performance that makes me like it.

    Israel - OK.
    Poland - unmemorable Bond theme.
Belarus - want to be The Levellers, but got it wrong...

    Pizza break over.

    Azerbaijan still my current favourite.

The much fancied entries from Italy and Portugal were awful !
