Eurovision Song Contest 2012

A Roma woman from Kosovo sings for Albania in Azerbaijan - can it get any more multicultural? One of the few entries not in English, too.

Nope, when it was in Finland, I thought that Apocalyptica who was playing during the break was more interesting than everything I heard this evening.

I remember that one, that was awesome. The songs, not so much.

This has been one very poor year, again. Slovakia and Turkey were the only ones I liked.

Apparently, everyone on German TV is contractually bound to mention the human rights abuse in Azerbaijan. We had the "word for Sunday" (every Saturday after the evening news a Christian pastor is on for a few minutes) dealing with it and now the commentator has mentioned it after only 3 songs in. This might make for a good drinking game.

Yeah, because their's is spotless. No mention of it on British TV at all, semi's, final, anything.

And Russia has the money to blow on organizing an ESC! I'm sure Greece and Spain have better things to do with theirs!

Fascinated at the discussion about past entrants. I guess you're all too young to remember that Cliff entered twice - and was pretty famous both before and after. Sandie Shaw (Puppet on a string) was a famous singer in her day, as were Kathie Kirby and Kenneth McKellar.

The 70s saw Mary Hopkin (who had a no. 1 hit with 'Amazing Grace'), The New Seekers, Clogagh Rogers, the Shadows and Cliff (again!) as well as Olivia Newton John.

In fact, Up till the 80s, the usual practice was to invite someone very well known. Only then did we start getting bands put together especially for Eurovision. The 90s were memorable only for Katrina and the Waves and Michael Ball - both of whom were big before the contest. Other entries were invented for it and failed (and have long vanished).

Beyond the UK, Abba went on to significant success and Nicole had a later career I believe.

I feel terribly old - I miss Katie Boyle. :(

I don't care, this time we sent a "foreigner", I will just blame immigrants :shifty:

And I was just about to laud the multiculturalism of the French entry. ;) The song wasn't bad but I felt it lacked something.

While I think the Italian song kind of loses cohesion in its latter half is it one of the favourites?

I heard so but I prefer their entry from last year. Italians should sing in Italian only, there is nothing wrong with their language :)
