Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Dammit, I thought us Europeans had successfully kept the Eurovision hidden from the rest of the world. :(
It's beig enough down here, because we have a LOT of new migrants from the EU all the time.

I remember one year Russia fielded the world's ugliest boy band, that made me laugh. So did what look like an East European Spice Girls another year, all short skirts and tottering high heels. And Switzerland, man... do they ever want to win this?

As for Jedward, you're the guys that put Dustin the Turkey out there. That was worse. Funny, but worse.

One of the reasons I watch ESC - this stunned me when I first saw it. One of the best things ever, and I'll debate anyone on that:

BTW: Brits, it's not a bad song, but... Englebert Humperdinck? Really?!

Well less than a week to go before the final. I must remember to find something else to watch. Might tune in for the best part of the night however the voting, I wonder if we'll see the usual voting patterns.

I think they should bring back the langauge rule, where a song has to be in one of the national languages of the country performing.

I don't think Jedward were selected deliberately because they'll lose. I think that there's a certain annoyance in this country that we haven't won the competition in a long time even though it is our god-given right, so we lash out by sending joke entries. If we can't win the competition then we'll mock it, that kinda thing.

Ah, that's stage 3 of the process of coping with not winning the ESC which will be followed by stage 4 - desperately trying to win so hard that your entry will only score a couple of charity points. Stage 5 is pretending not to care about the whole thing anymore and stage 6 is resigning to never winning it again.

Been there, done that. ;)

From Jedward to a bunch of Russian old ladies doing folk, this show caters for everybody and nobody and is a laugh if you don't take it too seirously

My favourites are Israel and Latvia - which means they have no chance. ;) There are some more good or interesting songs (Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Moldova) but most are a bit boring. It doesn't help that almost everyone sings in English now and that most are just generic pop songs/ballads. I don't know, I feel the ESC used to be weirder and thus more entertaining.
Austria, though, WTF? Montenegro's is pretty crazy but probably won't make it into the final.

Israel and Latvia. :adore: I agree that they're probably gonna fail though. :(

As for the language thing, most countries prefer to be competitive and send songs in English now (particularly the likes of Sweden and Denmark) as it means more chance of international success outside the contest.
The last few winners before the rule change were mainly Ireland and the UK and since then, we've only had one non-English winner. Respect to those countries like Croatia and Portugal who continue to send songs in their own language, but they're gonna need a much better song to win than all the others (and indeed those two haven't won and haven't ever come close) because English songs can crossover to voters from other countries much easier.
I don't mind foreign language songs (I love Finland's experiment into Swedish this year) but it was a lot more restrictive with the language rule and I'd rather not see it back.

Besides, Austria, San Marino and Montenegro are enough crazy for me this year. ;)

How many of the bands/singers that appear in Eurovision go onto fame outside of their own nation (if they didn't already have it)?

Can we name some

ABBA is the one that instantly springs to mind.

I kinda like the Greek song but then again, I have a weakness for "world music" and their entry contains some elements of Greek music, though it's sung in English. There's actually a huge Greek pop scene so I wonder why they don't win this often, anyway. I don't know who decides who they send, though.

I just looked at the list of the winners, I think Abba and Céline Dion (1988) are the most famous.

I don't have the time to listen to all the songs this year, I hope there will be enough trash for a drinking game ;)

But it's different for Germany, you guys always sucked at Eurovision. :p Ireland used to be really good at it, and it was the one international competition that we were successful at. Now the competition is filled with eastern European countries that don't appear to understand how awesome we are. :(

Riverdance went on to become a thing internationally after it was performed as an interval act, and that made Michael Flatley famous for a time, and absurdly rich. :sigh:

Lulu?

I'd like to think Bucks Fizz became international superstars but I know they didnt :)

Every year I also make an guess of those songs that I think will qualify to the final. These are the same ones that I posted to the Finnish ESC forum, called "Viisukuppila".
These are mostly based on my personal likings and some lucky guesses, plus past experiences about ESC.

So,these ten songs I guess/wish will go to the final:

Semifinal I

Iceland, Greece, Latvia, Albania, Romania, Finland, Cyprus, Denmark, Russia and Ireland:)

More faster paces songs in this semi but also many of those so called "funny songs".
I think Switzerland, Moldova and Austria might also go to the final, though the latter two are not my personal favorites.
San Marino is vocally better than the song itself would deserve, but it might be just too much, to too many.
Albania is to many a good ballad but to others just plain screaming.
I am bit afraid for Finland, though. Even though the song is good, as is the singer, many seem to find it boring. Though I have heard positive comments also. I think I give it 50-50 change for qualifying, based on the feeling I have now.
Denmark is a very nice song, but will it appeal to all..we will see.

Semifinal II
Serbia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, Sweden, Turkey, Estonia, Slovakia and Bosnia-Herzegovina:)

Lots of good ballads in this semi..and I have guessed them all to qualify. I have a feeling though that one of them wont, either Croatia or Bosnia( even though I like them both..as I do like Slovenia).
Norway and Georgia might also qualify. Norway is your basic pop/dance hit, that many people seem to like.
Slovakia might be a wrong bet, but since it is the only heavier rock song in the contest, I have a feeling that it might go to final..and Turkey will go with immigrant votes alone.

Now, I have never guessed songs all right,
but usually around 50-70 percent.
Lets see how well I do this year:lol::cool:

If it hadn't been for this thread, I would likely have forgotten about Eurovision and missed it two years running. That's completely unacceptable and would have been far more crushing than sense would seem to dictate, so thank you. Naturally, most of you have a significant headstart on me; I haven't heard any of the entries yet. The thread keeps mentioning Russian pensioners and Jedward, so I'm feeling assured that this year will be as "good" as ever. The familiar warm glow of Eurovision descends...

Well I can understand you never having heard of Bucks Fizz but I thought Lulu was pretty famous even outside of the UK.

Semifinal I

Latvia, Albania, Finland

Semifinal II
Macedonia, Croatia

Those are the ones I'd disagree with (for my predictions, not saying you're wrong or anything).
As much as I'd love Latvia and Finland to qualify I think they'll be a bit inaccessible to do it (same for Albania). It would make my year if Pernilla qualified though.
Macedonia is in a very precarious position and I can see it getting forgotten about. Croatia is going to be slaughtered by the draw, it's coming right after a very similar (and superior) song in Slovenia and right before Loreen.

I'd put in Hungary, Moldova (that is looking a cert right now due to rehearsals and stuff) and Austria and for semi 2 Netherlands and (as much as I dislike it) Lithuania instead.
Everything else I agree with.

I've been doing my full review over at bronykingdom as I started it over here and realised it was going to obliterate the thread, so if you can scroll past a few pony smilies and want to read some know-it-all adolescent's views and predictions on this contest, I've gone into a lot more detail over there (yet to be finished but I've done semi 1)

I do have another board that I discuss Eurovision on, it's getting very active over there! SO EXCITED! :D

(semi 1 tonight, be there or don't be a eurovision obsessive)

Russian grannies and Jedward are some of the worst of the lot, don't worry. ;) There's about 30 other songs better than both of them (let's just ignore the few that aren't  )
