EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

I don't agree that the game was fixed, but I think Domenech has a point about the penalty. Toni went down far, far too easily with minimal contact.

I certainly don't think it was worthy of a red card.

As for fining people for speaking their minds ? I would love it if one day somebody had a word with the European Court of Human Rights about that one. French citizens have the right to unrestricted freedom of speech.

^ Speaking your mind is one thing but in the article he virtually accused the ref of fixing the match saying the result was already arranged.

The guy is a total idiot, he said the same about holland before the game that they would fix it...crap excuses to save him from admitting that FRANCE are out because they were crap and he wasn't much better.

Leaving Trezeguet and Flamini were poor choices by him.

It was a clumsy challenge in the back. Definitely a red card since it was last man. I don't know why Philippe Mexès wasn't in the squad. Thuram is clearly too old and Abidal is a left back.

BTW Domenech proposed to his long time girlfriend Estelle Denis after the match.

At the final whistle, Domenech proposed to his girlfriend, Estelle Denis, a TV presenter. "Everything was so sad tonight," reflected Domenech. "I thought life has some beautiful moments and you should tell people you love them."
This will surely be the first occasion when a coach loses his job before his honeymoon period has started. "I'm wondering whether I should give up?" mused Domenech, who faced intense criticism for not trusting more in youth (such as leaving out Mathieu Flamini when Patrick Vieira never recovered from his thigh problem). "Gathering experience would have been interesting for the next generation," Domenech admitted. "This team have a great future."

^Flamini, yes, the Trez, no.

They took a risk on Vieira's fitness. They assumed they would get through the group stage and he would be available. As a result they lacked a box to box player.

Trezuget scored 20 goals in 34 games this season and with a record of 34 goals in 71 games for FRANCE, he should of been taken...Am still laughing at his call to put Abidal an average Left Back in centre back for the game yesterday.

^Way to rub it in.

Oh pants. What was that supposed to be? Where's Carrie to explain that debacle.

I cannot vouch for Carrie, but as one of those pesky and arrogant French I can fairly say they sucked. Truly and utterly sucked. The team as much as the coach. There are thousands of inane reasons why they failed. But the truth is: each and every team they faced was/were stronger than them. Now, let's start from scratch, bring in a new coach (Didier Deschamps, Godsdamnit!!!) and let them build ties and friendship and real desire to work/play together. Because from what transpires from comments, they all hate each other's guts.
And Makélélé's wife is FUCKING HOT!!!!

Oh yeah, they sucked. I left the pub before the 2nd period (for another pub with no TV ;) ).

Average players and a bad coach. I don't like Domenech, I never did, even when he was coaching the Bleuets.

Noémie Lenoir.
And so is Estelle Denis.

Before the tournament I had advancing:

(1st, 2nd)
Group A: Portugal, Czech Republic
Group B: Germany, Croatia
Group C: Netherlands, Italy
Group D: Russia, Spain

All in all, not too bad so far. :)

Looking forward to NL-RUS. Russia is in Germany's WC2010 qualifying group. That looks like it will be quite exciting.

Okay so the knockout stage is set. Here is my prediction. Well not so much prediction as how I want the the tournament to go.

Winner: Italy (2nd European Championship)

Spain should be able to beat Italy, but I'm a bit worried about Spain relying too heavily on Torres and Villa. Just look at the goal statistics - while Holland and Portugal has more people shooting goals than you can count, it's just these two guys for Spain.

Italy is without Gattuso and especially Pirlo. That could mean an easier task for Spain. But when Italy comes to these stages, with eliminating games, it is transformed completely. They have done so many times in the past, including in the last world cup.

Okay, let me see how I'm doing so far. My predictions earlier in the thread:

Group A: Turkey, Portugal, Czechs, Switzerland
Group B: Germany, Croatia, Poland, Austria
Group C: Italy, Netherlands, Romania, France
Group D: Spain, Russia, Greece, Sweden

Group Stage winners:
Group A: Portugal, Turkey
Group B: Germany, Croatia
Group C: France, Italy (although I would like Holland)
Group D: Spain, Russia

QF:
Portugal v. Croatia: Portugal
Germany v. Turkey: Germany
France v. Russia: France
Spain v. Italy: Italy

SF:
Portugal v. Germany: Germany
France v. Italy: France

Finals
Germany v. France: France

Well, not too good if I have France winning it all. I also had Germany coming out of the group first, not second, and I underestimated the Dutch although I am happy to be wrong.

New pick to win it all: Netherlands.

Here are my predictions for the quarter-finals (winner is bolded):
Portugal - Germany
Croatia - Turkey
Netherlands - Russia
Spain - Italy

Thanks :D

Every 20 years or so we actually get a chance to win something
