EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

My deepest condolsences to the Boulahrouz family and I hope Holland can win Euro 2008 for him.

...and I underestimated the Dutch although I am happy to be wrong.
New pick to win it all: Netherlands.
Thanks :D
Every 20 years or so we actually get a chance to win something

Well, when I lived in Germany I got up to Utrecht (beautiful) and Amsterdam a great deal and I have always had a soft spot for Nederland voetbal.

New picks for this round:

Portugal/Germany
Croatia/Turkey
Netherlands/Russia
Spain/Italy (Spain is the better team, but I'm going with the weight of history)

If Spain does not beat Italy this time then I don't think they'll ever do it at a major tournament. Italy will be missing Nesta*, Totti*, Cannavaro and Pirlo. Of course the first two decided to retire long before this.

With Panucci in the center Italy doesn't have an advantage at the back. Without Pirlo and Totti Italy's midfield is on paper inferior to Spain's. The Villa and Torres combo is much better than Luca Toni up there all alone.

Terrible about Boulahrouz' daughter. :(

---

My tips for the rest of the tournament:

Portugal beats Germany
Turkey beats Croatia
Netherlands beat Russia
Spain beats Italy

Portugal beats Turkey
Netherlands beat Spain

Netherlands beat Portugal.

I, for one, welcome our new clog-wearing overlords.

This is turning out to be more entertaining than I thought.

2:0 for Germany after 25 minutes.

German defense looks a bit shaky, leading to a 2:1. This will get very interesting in the second half.

3:1!

Another free kick by Schweinsteiger leads to a goal. He scored twice against Portugal in WC06 (plus a free kick that lead to an own goal). Portugese must really hate him by now.

3:2, this is going to be close.

And that's it! Germany advances! What a great (and close) game!

As expected Portugal were shocking at defending set pieces. Definitely didn't look like a top international side on that front. The Germans made most of that weakness.

Since the win against Austria on Monday there were a couple of commentaries on Spiegel Online. One suggested a 4-2-3-1 like they played today. Another suggested set pieces might be important.
They were right!

Two fucking goals exactly the same way? WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disgrace! A fucking disgrace!!!!

Euro scheduling needs a bit of adjustment. The team in the later half of the bracket will have less time between matches to recover. If Italy or Spain reach the final they would have to play 3 knockout games in 8 days. Compared to Germany who can do the same task in 11 days.

Shocking defending, shocking goal keeping. Both headed goals the keeper came off his line to do nothing more than put himself in a poor position.

I shed no tears over Ronaldo or Deco not getting the silverware.

People, the party on the streets of Hannover last night was great. I've got a glorious hangover *grins*.

Like Bierhoff said, they were the underdog. That's so cool, and it's even cooler that they played so well after their previous performances. And did anyone see pequeno Cristianinho first checking which one of his legs should be hurting before starting to howl? He's such an actress (sorry), that one. And as a woman I can say, he's not the least bit attractive with that long neck and small head of his. He's the homem ganso.

Anyway... I feel a bit sorry for Felipão, he's a cool bloke and a good coach (back in the Grêmio-days in Porto Alegre). But I'm glad that Germany won. I want the people to party as long as I'm still in this country. Now it's either Turkey or Croatia.

I'm looking forward to the Italy match as well. I hope they win.

Yeah, I saw that. Comic brilliance.

CR is a great player, but at times, I'd just like to punch the guy. And I'm glad I'm not the only person that has noticed that his head is just too &*?%ing small.

That German team, yesterday, was not the same team that played Austria a few days ago. If they play like this again, they should easily manage to not let Croatia win again, or to beat Turkey.

... to be utterly and completely destroyed by Holland in the final :D

I am VERY glad that Germany/Turkey, if it happens, is the Swiss' problem and not ours :D .. Turkey/Croatia - in Vienna later today - will be fun too.

Does anyone know why UEFA has changed the format of EURO 2008 so people from the same group can meet in the semi final and not final unlike previous EURO's ?

Its the same format as the world cup now but the WC has an extra round, seems a poor idea to do it in a EURO.

Also UEFA are looking into increasing the cup from 16 teams after Euro 2016 :wtf:
