EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

France and Italy are now both out of the tournament as I am sure Van Basten is going to tell his B team to mail it in against Romania.
Yeah, but a lot of the B-team guys will have something to prove, so they might play better then the A-team guys would were they in the same situation.

Yes, when a team has guys like Vennegoor of Hesselink and Huntelaar sitting on the bench, I wouldn't worry about heir B-team...
Although it would be kind of funny if they lost against Rumania, just to rub it in for Italy and France. :D

WOW

That was the most beautiful thing ever :p...Seriously the Dutch are on fire and on this, no one can beat them to the EURO crown.

1st goal was all Malouda's fault for trying to foul Kuyt instead of actually defending. I do think FRANCE was robbed off a penalty because while it was an accident, the ball was going in past Van De Sar, no doubt about it but hey who cares because Holland deserved the win.

The 3rd and 4th goal were the best of EURO so far and Sneijder for me is the best player in the tourney. I wil credit France for putting up a much bigger fight than Italy when they lost 3-0 and also MUTU how could you miss that pen, you would of dumped out ITALY

Oh Van Basten is a genius footballer. It was a pleasure to watch him in the Milan colors but it remains to be seen if he can hack it as a manager. Although it looks like Saacchi's class is coming along nicely. Rijkaard and Ancellotti have been very successful and if Van Basten can get the oranje an Euro title then he'll join that elite group.

I think the Dutch B team will play "hard" but will also be instructed to do in whatever subtle manner they can to allow Romania to win by a goal or something.

I don't know, I don't think they have it in them to willingly lose - and what do they really have to fear from Italy?

[changed my avatar in honour of the Netherlands' superb performance at the Euro this year. :D]

You don't have to willingly lose. Just play the game like you would play in a pick up match when you were kids. :D

As most football fans know Italy are notorious slow starters. They won the 1982 World cup after not winning one match in the group stages (nearly knocked if I recall correctly).

Trust me if a team gets a chance to knock Italy and France out in the early stages you take the chance.

Exactly. The Euro tourney is more like chess than any other major team sport; the obvious move isn't always the best move.

France v. Netherlands. That was game of the tournament for me so far, and it is now difficult not to say the Dutch are rampant. I agree the score somewhat flatters, and this is in part because Holland are somewhat suspect in defense. They can't afford to take the foot off the accelerator because their defense can't (IMO) absorb pressure for long periods. So there they are scoring at the death.

France had their spells in attack and had their chances, and the missed handball (was that Sneijder?) could have been a match changer - as could the missed lob that Henry puts away 9 times out of 10.

But, boy, the Dutch look good. That neat turn and pass by v.Nistelrooy which eventually sets up the v.Persie goal was a thing of beauty. And it is more than a little pleasing to see v.Persie coming back into form. The Robben goal was also absolutely magnificent. And, these were the players coming off the bench.

If they continue to play entertaining football like this, and I don't know that they can play a different way, this is the team I want to take it all.

Lalalalaaaa lalalalalalalalaaaaaaa lalalalalalalalaaaaaaaa lalalalalalalalaaaaaaaaaa!

There are many things I can say now (like, yes 'we' were lucky, yes France missed good chances, yes, it looked like hands by Ooijer, yes the way is still long... hopefully, no we won't willingly give Romania a win, not this team, not now, not when you're on a roll -- and hey, if France and Italy tie there game Romania might even go through after a loss), but for now I think I'll keep it at

Lalalalaaaa lalalalalalalalaaaaaaa lalalalalalalalaaaaaaaa lalalalalalalalaaaaaaaaaa!

Wij houden van Oranje, om zijn daden en zijn doen!

Cheers from a country that's so confused about what's happening that it can only party at the moment!

Edit: hey, I can also share the melodies with you. The songs I had in mind when writing this down are on YouTube (partly thanks to some Kaiserslautern fans :) ) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qN25d2hbHQ&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwLsYHzwYCA

If Germany plays with the same spirit they did today, Austria has a change. But they need a win...

And then Poland is not allowed to beat Croatia with a bigger goal difference than Austria beats Germany. Lot of ifs. My money's still on Germany going through, but who knows...

Beenhakker wasn't happy with the last minute penalty. Dutch tv had a short interview with him yesterday 15 minutes after the match and he was very angry. He felt the Polish had their victory stolen from them by a referee who wanted to show that he dared to give a last minute penalty for a minor offence.

Yeah .. Polish newspapers have also been saying that they were stolen of their just victory.

Never mind Poland was only leading because the ref awarded them a goal which was at least 2 metres off-sides. Never mind that the ref did not award Austria a penalty earlier in the game that he really should

In any case .. Austria is a harsh mistress. They're playing WAY better than they have for .. as long as I can remember, but it's still an utterly frustrating team to pull for.

All these young players who are obviously talented, and can play out pretty awesome chances .. but have obvioulsy never been told that you're supposed to shoot at the goal, not at the goalie. Aargh!

^And never mind the fact that Webb got it absolutely right. It was a nailed on penalty. He'd give that any day of the week in the Premier League.

Man, I wish I were able to see more of the tournament. Because of my work schedule, I'm either asleep or at work when ESPN airs the matches over here. :(

The NOS has live streams at ek2008.nos.nl
I'm not sure if you can access them from abroad though :o.

Between them, the BBC and ITV are showing all of the matches on the Internet but the feeds are restricted to UK residents due to rights issues.

The Austrians are in for a beating on Monday, and I'm not just saying this because I'm in the DFB fanclub :) . Seriously, the German team played like they were on drugs against Croatia, I don't see that happening again. And since England isn't in this one at all, at least Germany has to make it a bit farther than this.... And please, bringing up Cordoba after 30 years is kind of pitiful.

What else.... the Netherlands? The same thing that always happens to them will happen in this tournament: they swim, swim, swim only to die on the beach (old Brazilian proverb). Van der Vaart said something similar, that they should not get over-excited (which was what happened with the DFB-team). I like the Netherlands, I'm just still devastated that Mark van Bommel isn't playing. Thing is, I don't see them winning the tournament.

I know it's mean, but Italy's predicament makes England's (huge) and Germany's (little) misfortunes feel less painful.

Are there other women posting here? Haven't seen any....

Oh great, be proud of yourselves, like the two countries are anywhere near being on equal footing in this sport...

Anyway, the only ones possibly getting "beaten up" are the Piefke, a defeat for Austria wouldn't be a "beating" at all, only business as usual.

I have to say that the RTÉ coverage has been great so far - especially the Aprés Match comedy segments shown at the end of each night's programme!

(Basically, three comedians impersonate various personalities and lay in plenty of stick - and they are usually pretty spot on!)
