Ethan Peck's Spock

Do we also need an explanation for why Shran and Weyon look and sound the same? Or why Sisko's dad is a dead ringer for Admiral Cartwright?

It amazes me that we already have more hours of Peck playing Spock than we do Quinto. Peck does a fine job in the role and I expect he’ll grow into it more as he can now play the character in a more familiar setting. He’s Spock for the ‘20s.

I find it a little hard to believe that Ethan's Spock grows up to be Nimoy's Spock.
I found Peck's Spock fascinating to watch. what I don't fully accept is a guy like Peck's Spock with his attitude in discovery grows up to be the Stone cold Nimoy's pure Vulcan logic spock who only lets his emotions slip once in a while. Ethan's Spock feels more like the exact copycat of Quinto's Spock. Both Spock feel more like characters who balance logic and emotion, being a Vulcan and acknowledging their humanity.

Ethan's Spock growing up to be Nimoy's Spock does not match up well when you watch this scene from TNG.

Data talks about Spock abandoning his human side to choose only the vulcan ways. Spock replies he almost feels envious of Data being immune to any human traits though hold no regrets of abandoning his humanity to completely embrace being a full vulcan. Discovery just doesn't set the narrative for Nimoy's Spock. It is easier to buy Peck's Spock as an another alternate reality Spock like Quinto's Spock than a young TOS Spock who grew up to be Nimoy's Spock

"STD is Kelvin!!!!"
Nope.

Apparently, yes. Or the fact that Commodore Wesley looks just like Security Officer Giotto. Must be related!

Twin brothers. Giotto used his mother's maiden name so that people wouldn't think he was getting any benefits from his brother being this big-time Commodore.

But we have several snippets of Spock's life before and after TOS: including being bullied in TAS's "Yesteryear" (and several are line-by-line replays in the 2009 movie), his delivery of lines in "The Cage", his scenes with Number One in "Short Treks: Q&A", and then his failed attempt at Kolinahr in TMP, and his attitude to humans when he arrives on the Enterprise. In each case, he shows a varying balance of human vs Vulcan traits. And then he goes through death, resurrection, the Fal Tor Pan and retraining of his mind.

He is speaking to Data after decades of his own evolving demeanour. It is way more complex than he can sum up in a few sentences.

Since Peck is building from Spock's specific "The Cage" performance, I think he does well.

With the exception of Q&A, Peck's Spock has been after The Cage Spock. He should be bridging the gap between The Cage and WNMHGB. Two vastly different portrayals. Perhaps that is what SNW will contend with.

People change in a hundred years. I'm not the same person I was 10 years ago.

Which begs the question of plausible threshold. Okay, Spock could become the most charismatic used car or circus ticket salesman, since PT Barnum in over a hundred years and Sarek probably couldn't. Or the biggest mass murderer. Mickey from Doctor Who became a different personality type altogether and only because he saw a robot in the shape of a dog give him the notion. It's all a bit rough around the edges in terms of being able to swallow it.

As for acting, of the two so far*, Quinto and Peck were both good. Just Quinto had the better dialogue and story, IMHO.

* what, you don't think that there won't be a dozen actors playing Spock by the time 2050 arrives? :guffaw:

Quinto is one of the main stars of his movies. His stories are more fleshed out for that reason. Peck is supporting the main star in discovery. His stories are more limited.
