Equinox episode on this week, most criticized in Voyager

Chakotay's and Tuvok's nonreactions to murder, indeed, their insistence on protecting murderers is forced mischarcterization in the service of a plot. It also seems pretty repulsive in purely human terms.

It happens in real life. So not all that unplausible at all:

Abu Ghraib Prison and some of our troops throwing a blind eye to torture and murder
Plus, Tuvok is Vulcan. What emotional reaction is he going to have?

Chakotay I believe without the consent of the EMH to justify Janeways instability, would be an act of mutiny.

Which actually probably would have been an interesting plot twist if you think about it because the Dr. without his ethical subroutines was on the ship. Why didn't he simply declare her unfit to prevent Voyager from going after Captain Ransom?

Because that would have been ethical.

But he was trying to help Ransom escape from Voyager. By stopping Janeway it would have achieved that objective.

But wouldn't being completely loyal to Ransom still be ethical?

The canon on the episode establishes he was loyal to Ransom as he was giving shield modulation frequencies to the Equinox to fight Voyager.

In any case, the plot was good as it was. I'm simply saying that it would have been interesting if he had declared Janeway unfit for duty on top of an already good two part Voyager show.

Unless he figured keeping an unstable Janeway in charge was a better advange than having a stable Chakotay?

I guess we shall never know.

The biggest problem with Equinox, is that it's a sharp reminder: Equinox (the ship and crew), is what Voyager should have been! A bit less on the abusing of life forms, but still, THAT is how the show should have been written and proceeded, including Voyager building up damage over time - as well as losing the paint job.

Equinox is almost like the writers are going: "We know, we know. But suits of the studio don't allow us." (The same for the Maquis not being in Starfleet uniforms in Barclay's holodeck program by the way.)

Decent enough episode. Good to see Ransom come around in the end for a little redemption.

Interesting topic for a post, me thinks.

I guess I'm kind of late to the party, but the whole flaw of Equinox is the "Janeway ducked" resolution of the cliffhanger in part two. Once that happens, all the dramatic tension is just done for. Honestly, if the show had balls, it would have had Janeway be Ahab. She interrogates the Noah Lessing, goes over the edge, and chases down Ransom without looking at reason. And, instead of getting off in the end, I think this should have been the end of Janeway. No Janeway ducks. How about Janeway gets killed because of her obsession?

Changing things up with Ransom as Captain would have been a great kick in the pants for the series. Ultimately, we return to the status quo, and the few surviving members of Equinox are never seen or heard from again.

^^Cool idea but no fan is going except the captain being killed before the end of the series. Look at how many still complain about Kirk's death. If Berman wasn't getting death threats before, we sure would then.

Still, if Voyager was on cable and could afford to let Mulgrew go, I think you have a bold idea. ;) I myself always thought if I made a Trek show, I'd have a rotating cast because I would want to kill off characters to give it more drama. However, I don't think many fans like drastic changes like that. So I'm not sure my idea would keep an audience.

I really like Equinox and have enjoyed it every time I saw it. It showed what desperation can do to people and a possibility of where Voyager could have went.

I do wish there would have been some sort of followup though.
