Later productions became more (too imho) serialized and created arcs etc. I guess all of SNW is a continuation of The Cage.

Now what episodes from earlier series could have been continued on later series? I know the brain parasites that infected Starfleet in TNG should.

In regards to the TOS Defiant and episodes already mentioned "Tholian Web/In A Mirror Darkly" there's the Discovery episode where it's seen/referenced. It was originally the ship in "Future Tense" but then changed.
"Unification III" is a something to the TNG episodes of the same name (I haven't seen it)

The current shows should have some planet pre-first contact in SNW, see it again in Lower Decks, and then it's a Federation member in Discovery.
When I think about "Conspiracy" now I think the writers went way too far with that episode in having them take over Starfleet and then getting thwarted so easily. The episode should have been a smaller more localised invasion and then the idea of the signal being sent to start an invasion would feel more ominous to me. As it is, we already kicked their asses and we'll do it again. And other people pointed out that the Changelings fill the same role later on in the franchise and with their connection to one of the main characters they have more impact. Also the idea of loss of self is basically the Borg, and Stargate SG-1 used a similar parasitic takeover of the host idea as their main premise, so we kinda got a better deal in the long run.

It is clearly a continuation of Sarek's story in a way that doesn't occur in the movies and a treatment that even few recurring characters got up to that point.
