Episodes in which Data is captain

I think his best two 'command moments' were:

1. When he was in command of the Sutherland and he put that goof Hobson on his place. "FIRE!"

2. When he gave Worf that dressing down in "Gambit". Spiner does 'Data in command' really well, he would have made a believable Captain one day.

Yes, loved both these scenes. Just two of a countless number of memorable moments in TNG involving Data!

Maniarek.

As Second Officer would he not always be in command of the third shift? So even though we've only seen a few times of him in command technically he's always had a command role on the ship.

Good point, i never thought about it like that before...

I was watching the episode 'Brothers' last night from season 4. Data is called home to his father, (originally presumed dead). Data takes control of the ship, deactivating the life support on the bridge to force everyone out, he then over rides all ship systems to only answer to picard on the bridge (whom data has been impersonating). He sets the Enterprise on a course to the residence of his father at warp 9.3, which apparently at the time was dangerous due to some recent upgrade or something. During this brief rebellion in which Data has no control over, nor does he even remember. He isn't 'given' the bridge as such, but the way in which he aquires it and takes control of the entire ship single handed is awesome, he 'kicks butt'!

Hope this helped =]

In Brothers, the danger on him taking over the Enterprise was because that the ship needed to get a young boy the sick bay of a Starbase, not because of any system upgrades.

O ye, i remember now... but there was some issues with travelling at high warp due to some system changes, im sure of it...

Yes, but in those situations he's not an acting captain. He's in command of the bridge, but not senior commanding officer aboard, much like The Hunted has him in command during Danar's escape, while Picard & Riker are planetside. There may be more examples of that, but I'm struggling to recall times both Riker & Picard are both off ship

I think Redemption & Gambit are the only examples of him in the role of captain, & honestly I always felt he accorded himself better than even Riker, who whenever thrust into the role, in Picard's absence, was a royal grump about it lol
While he's not a captain in this episode, I've always enjoyed "The Ensigns of Command" as a good showcase of Data's leadership capacity, as he manages to turn a hostile crowd to his way of thinking in fairly diplomatic way...
Unilateral command of an away mission was pretty rare for him as well. He's always with someone, Tam Lebrun, Kyla Marr, etc..
The only times I can think of when Crusher was in charge was in Thine Own Self, when precisely nothing happens while she's in command, and in Descent, where she and her skelleton crew blow up a borg cube.

Am I missing something?
Well, she's in command of the Pasteur in the finale but I think that's all we see

I asked Perplexity.ai, and it cited the following episodes.

Data Temporarily in Command
4-3 "Brothers"
4-14 "Clues"
4-17 "Night Terrors"
7-26 "Redemption, Part II" (of the Sutherland)
6-26 "Descent, Part I"
7-4 "Gambit, Part I"
7-5 "Gambit, Part II"

Look newbies, necromancy is definitely not approved. Anything older than a year or so is considered carrion and it is better to start a new thread. FIFTEEN YEARS is ridiculous! Please read the board rules. Since further comment resulted, I won’t close this but I can’t promise that for the future.

From the top of my head, times where Data was in command of the ship, temporarily (meaning both Picard and Riker were off the ship or incapacitated) or otherwise...

"Justice"
"Angel One"
"The Vengeance Factor"
(implied, since Picard and Riker were both on the Gatherers' ship when Riker beamed over to stop Yuta)
"The Hunted"
"The High Ground"
(implied, since Riker was leading the away team to rescue Picard and Crusher)
"Clues"
"Night Terrors"
"The Mind's Eye"
(implied, since Picard and Riker beamed down to talk to the governor)
"Redemption II"
"Tapestry"
(implied, since Picard and Riker were on that away team in the very beginning of the episode)
"Gambit, Part I"
"Gambit, Part II"

There are, of course, many times where he was in command of the night watch or when Picard and Riker are off duty or otherwise engaged with things aboard the ship.

Are these episodes where Data is in command, or just when he has the bridge, because Picard and Riker are somewhere else?

These are times when Picard and Riker are either off the ship or incapacitated. Data is in command because neither are available due to illness ("Angel One"), kidnapping ("The High Ground", "Gambit" two-parter), being incapacitated ("Night Terrors", "Clues"), diplomatic mission ("The Hunted", "The Mind's Eye", "Tapestry"), or other reason.

He has the bridge when both or either of them are still aboard the ship, which has happened many times.

I just hadn't realized it was that frequent.

Setting aside "You have the bridge" situations, so situations where somebody has command and can't be simply relieved by a more senior/competent person stepping in a turbolift:

Picard, Riker and Data as above

Crusher in Descent

La Forge was in a command, notably in Arsenal of Freedom (and in Picard season 3)

Worf was in Conundrum, which may or may not count as they had memory loss. In The Emmisary Picard and Riker were in the next room so wouldn't count in my view.

Troi was arguably in Disaster, although Data, Riker and Picard were able to issue orders, they couldn't communicate and thus be in command.

Aside from the above, and
* Jellico in Chain of Command
* the Ferengi in Rascals
* imposter Picard in Allegiance
* possessed Picard in Lonely Among Us
* Halloway in the alternate Q-created world of Tapestry

was there anyone else in command of the Enterprise D (i.e the most senior person on board) at any point?

Crusher in Descent
Don't forget the Pastuer in Q's anti-time future in "All Good Things..."

Were these the only times we saw LaForge legitimately in command? Loved him being in command of the Ent-D in the series finale (of Picard).

"The Emissary" was just to fake out the Klingons, so I dunno if this counted. He did command the Enterprise-E after Picard, even if that's off screen.
Troi was arguably in Disaster, although Data, Riker and Picard were able to issue orders, they couldn't communicate and thus be in command.
"Disaster" definitely counts, because for a large part of the episode, the bridge crew didn't know who was alive, dead, out of contact, so Troi was defacto commander until the status changed.

Good memory!
