Best Disc: Season 3, Disc 4

I know that every fan has wildly varying opinions on which episodes are phenomenal and which ones deserve the brain soap. This is your chance to share those opinions. How would you stack up the episodes of this fine series? Which episodes did I judge unfairly? In particular, what are the best scenes and moments in the episodes I put in the "Bad" category? I put a few of my personal choices within the ranking list. You may or may not convince me to move an episode up into the watchable categories, but I may watch those bits on future marathons. I do monitor the "A Journey" thread, so if you haven't reached an episode yet, just post in that thread when you do, and those comments will still reach me.

Also, for those fans of TNG and the novels, which episodes get sequels, prequels, or mentions in the books? For example, "Darmok" was followed up by "Friends with the Sparrows" in The Sky's the Limit, and it raised my opinion of the episode enough that it went from Bad to Tolerable.

I hope for a lively and respectful discussion to follow.

I'm not sure what I expected when I created this thread, but it certainly wasn't a great big round of indifference. I thought that internet TNG fans would surely come to the defense of episodes they like that received low rankings. After 50 views and no responses, I will just assume that everybody on this board agrees with every one of my choices. ;)

I actually found it quite interesting because I did something similar when I was running through TNG - I 'graded' each episode on a 1-10 scale. I did it initially just to keep tabs on which episodes I really liked and which ones to possibly skip over whenever I felt like watching TNG. I later realized I could rank the seasons and, better than that, actually compare TNG to other TV shows (I did it with DS9 and DS9 came out only slightly ahead).

The one thing I didn't get was your number values (i.e what they corresponded to) for 'Season Highs and Lows' and 'Season Averages'. When I did my 'computations,' I ended up with each season being a numerical value between 1 and 10 (i.e I averaged each season based on the episode grades for that season). For example, season three ended up being rated relatively high at an average of (something like) 8.3, whereas season one ranked the lowest at an average of (something like) 7.4.

Edit (to start an argument and play into your hand): I disagree with your grade for 'The Chase' - I ranked it as 'tolerable' (7/10): I thought the whole idea was too preposterous really. Another one I strongly disagree with (and I realize I'm in the minority here): 'The Outcast.' I ranked it as a 10/10 episode which I know many people will laugh at. I loved it for it being 'microlevel' and dealing with interpersonal problems and tackling a relatively uncomfortable subject. This episode was very intimate and I think very well-written.

The "Season Highs and Lows" and "Season Averages" come from the actual rank numbers from 1 to 178. Season 3's highest peak and lowest valley were #1 and #148, for example. The best episodes have lower numbers in a ranking list, so that is why the lower season averages are better.

I made myself a separate file that sorted this list into airdate order, making it easier to compute certain numbers.

I did this for VOY, too. When I finish going through the other three series again, then I will create a master list of Trek that analyzes how the series stack up against each other and how well the franchise did as a whole.

I see.

I didn't go as far as to actually rank the episodes from first to last. I thought about doing it, but it became really difficult when it came to ranking those 8/10 episodes - they were just too many of them and it was going to take way too much time to figure out which ones were really better than other ones.

I'm kind of annoyed actually at the prices of the Voyager DVD's - I was really looking forward to going through that series and ranking each episode to find out where it ranked in comparison with TNG and DS9. My 'findings' as I said suggest that a lot of people have it wrong - DS9 was not WAY better than TNG. TNG had a very bad couple of early seasons but it still made up for it due to seasons 3-7. I'm basing this on memory, but I'm almost positive the final grade ended up as something very close to this:

TNG: 8.04 (out of 10)
DS9: 8.09 (out of 10)

Not very much difference there and not very much to warrant the claim that DS9 was miles ahead of TNG.

Again, just my opinion. I did like using numbers though because it took some of the bias out it (i.e. saying one particular season is great just because it has a few great episodes can be faulty if you're forgotten that there were actually a lot of mediocre episodes in there too).

I understand what you mean, DostoyevskyClone, about finding it tough to differentiate between episodes with the same score. "Booby Trap" and "Qpid" would get the same score on a numerical scale, so putting "Booby Trap" ahead of "Qpid" is mostly arbitrary. However, in general, I think it came out well. The only time the numbers matter more than categories to me is if I'm doing a Top 50 marathon or something.

A couple of other episodes I think I should comment on:

'Violations' - I think this is a brilliant episode, so it's a shame you'll likely never watch it again. The 'mind rape' scenes, while disturbing, were also highly creative - the camera work and tone of them really made this a memorable, highly enjoyable episode for me.

'Genesis' - another episode I'm definitely in the minority on (again, a shame you'll likely never decide to watch it again). I thought this episode was very creative. I think people tend to be too hard on this show - this story had SUCH a great tone to it. There were also many great parts (Riker losing his mind saying "Computer," all the weird actions of the other crew before they turn, Picard exhibiting the traits of the animal he will turn into, the Enterprise as a haunted house, etc. etc.)
