I can't articulate why it felt "off" save for the fact that the original films.. even the smarmy main characters didn't talk like that.. they didn't really talk much different but the subtly is what got me. "Hello what have we here" from Lando is ultra smooth, wheres Finn's lines are ultra cringey.
That's a false equivalency comparison and if you're expecting Finn to be like Lando then you will be disappointed.Lando is ultra smooth, wheres Finn's lines are ultra cringey.

like I said.. I will see the film. I think JJ has faults but he can be a pretty awesome director. Like that scene with the desert "they fly now chase".. it's a silly silly moment I hate it objectively but man JJ caopures some energy from it.But when the RT score was given, you suggested that it was deserved. Sounds to me you've already made up your mind. So, what the fuck? Honestly?

sure, me too. One some level there is nothing wrong with it. It just never felt write. it felt too modern earth, not like a Star Wars thing. And it, like much of what is done with the Finn character, doesn't mesh with his backstory and fit the character. (I also don't think Rey's story fits her behavior, but that's another story)
Anyway I remember sitting in the theater and just being caught by it. It didn't lose me.. not yet.. but it took me out of the film in a jolting way, and that's when the "feel" started to leave the sequel
It's a well made point, but it will fall on deaf ears. That's a really nitpicky thing to be 'done' with these new movies, and I'm sorry, but the OT had dialogue mentioning 'dusting crops', (amongst others) clearly an earth term also. These characters largely speak English, despite hailing from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - which in itself isn't plausible if you want to analyse it, so your point doesn't hold water.
Insert "My days of not taking you seriously have come to a middle" meme here.
It's past the point of logic. It will literally make no sense. It's the weird obsseiveness of fandom to hate-watch something for no other reaon than to hope it burns. It's so many logical fallacies tied together that unravelling them would take a team of philosophers a decade to sort it all out.
At the end, it is simply bitterness pretending to be even handed. It has reached a point of not worth it since there is no good faith in the discussion any more.
The most frustrating thing is, I happen to agree with several of his points on the ST, but they're buried under so much blatant trolling, I can't bring myself to engage with them. Maybe I'm the mug here?
Either way this SW board has become the most toxic I've experienced in my 6+ years on here. It's ridiculous.
I'll be fair here. I love the original trilgy.. a sound solid story, likeable characters, visceral action, and SFX that were truly innovative. But they were not perfect.
Example, for years I was on the "hate ROTJ train" and guess what, none of my criticisms I had during that time went away.
they are still there. and they are a little different than the normal criticisms like "teddy bears beat the empire"
My main criticism was that it was a film made entirely of "arrivals" so much of the screen-time is people arriving at places.
It begins with the shuttle arriving at the Death star, .. and then it shows Vader disembarking in a rather slowly paced scene. .. then it has the droids arriving at the palace in a scene just as slow paced, followed by every other character arriving separately (by the way .. on a side note.. people point out Luke's flawed plan for the rescue.. I actually don't think he had a plan.. because he didn't know how the crime lord and his men were organized.. so his plan was to just simply to get each of his men inside, and once inside, they'd improvise a rescue) .. fortunately after that opening act there is not a Luke arrives on Dagobah scene, but we DO have a scene where people arrive at the rebel base, followed by the strike team arriving in orbit of Endor, following them arriving on the planet, followed by them arriving at the bunker, followed by them arriving at the village, followed by Luke arriving at the shuttle pad followed by him and Vader arriving on the death star.. whereas the previous film everyone was in motion and the pace seemed a bit quicker.
I also think that something could have happened in Act 2 to increase the stakes (to that point the heroes feel like they are in a completely different film form the villains). I always thought that a wing of TIES should have came in and broken up the assembled fleet and damaging a few ships. And the Endor strike team would be cut off from Ackbar and the others and they'd have to discuss the gamble of going through with the plan not knowing if Ackbar and the rest of the fleet were even still around. Just a bit of suspense there.
But I love the film.. because it kept true to the others, and had the best scenes and character work (not to mention the best space and ground battles) of the others. It is not flawless, but they still pushed the envelope..
what behavior? I've stated my opinions.. opinions that are not popular here.. and I'm glad to do it, even if it means people here calling me sexist or whatever. It's everyone else's behavior that should be questioned.Giving a fair critique on an OT film does not justify your behaviour on these boards in the last few weeks.

start where you want. I will answer if you want. But I'd rather talk about Sw. about how cool it is, about the wasted potential.. etcWhere do you want me to start?
They call it as they see it.if it means people here calling me sexist
Before our beloved Mod of Balance has to speak might I suggest other remedies? But when the same criticisms are presented in a level of, as you suggest, blatant trolling, its really hard to take them seriously. I need to stop taking the bait.
I endured being on a SW dominant board through the Prequels as well as the startrek.com boards when Abrams first came out. Yup, this is worst...hard to believeI've been here on and off for 18 years and I have to agree.
