Sometimes it seems like a lot of things are successful in spite of their creators and not because of them.

In life, with relationships, I agree. However, with fandoms and franchises it is less obvious. For me, it's been a bit of time, and a lot of heartache, watching fandoms tear themselves apart over the SW prequels, as well as Abrams Trek.I think that is good advice for everything in life.
Yep, for me it was noticing the stormtrooper banging his head on the door.
ESB the worst (because 'nothing happened').
I've tried, believe me. Multiple viewings has minimized a few of my complaints, but largely magnified others. It's also one of the reasons I say to most people who didn't like TLJ that they should give it another go, because most of the criticisms I've heard sound a lot like things I once would have said about ESB.
or maybe they just found it a boring tonal mess made up entirely of time filler subplotsI used to have pretty much the same opinion. It wasn't until I watched it again years later that I really started to appreciate it. I don't like ESB.Okay, but there’s a difference. I don’t know anyone who flat out didn’t like ESB. It just wasn’t their favourite. I see lots of little ideas like this that seem to suggest TLJ is some kind of unappreciated gem, but they tend to be based more on shaky reasoning and perhaps a touch of wishful thinking.

I think it is wildly entertaining. I don't think that is shaky nor wishful thinking. I love this Luke Skywalker, and the story he shares with Rey and Kylo Ren. Every time I've sat down and watched it, it has been a blast.
Isn't that the point of all this? To be entertained. I can see folks not being fans of it, but to call others views "shaky" and "wishful thinking" is pretty fucking poor form.
I don't like ESB.
I can appreciate it from a visual and technical standpoint. But it is not enjoyable for me.
Don't know how old I need to get to grow to love it...Not sure you really understood what I said. I don’t think it’s shaky reasoning or wishful thinking for you or anyone else to consider TLJ entertaining. I was responding to the idea that TLJ is going to become utterly beloved based on the fact that many fans didn’t like ESB as much as ANH on first viewing.
Sure, there will always be people who don’t like something. As I said, it’s more that many people grow to enjoy ESB more as they get older rather than going from hating it to loving it.

We won’t know that for years to come.
There’s a big difference between going from thinking a movie is good to thinking it’s great and thinking a movie isn’t bad to thinking it’s great.
Works under the idea that people all dislike it. There are likely plenty out there that like it, but don’t consider it great.
Depends on the person. I have no desire to revisit ESB, it isn't my favorite of the OT, and I don't see that changing. There’s a big difference between going from thinking a movie is good to thinking it’s great and thinking a movie isn’t bad to thinking it’s great.

Didn't say you said that.GOOD LORD! I never said you would change your opinion. I said right from the outset that some people are always going to dislike something.
Didn't say you said that.
I was just remarking that I was someone who didn't like ESB, in response to the assertion that you didn't know anyone who didn't like it.
Ok...just making a comment. In real life! I don’t really feel like I know anyone on this board. And again, I don’t think you’re going to magically change just because others did.
