Absolutely. There is no justification for the flames that Tran received. One doesn't have to like anything about TLJ to understand that.

There is no excuse I agree for the abuse. It's not the actresses fault.
But everyone knows there are vile people out that will jump on a actress for any weaknesses. Rian should of known that and made sure the writing was strong.
Giving a woman, minority actress such a terrible role was incompetence from him.
But no one can say rose tico was a well written character. It wasn't. Every line was a cliche, half of them contradictory.
If you look at rogue one with the most diverse cast you can see there was far less abuse at actors because they were mostly solid and well written.
Rian should have made sure the character of rose tico was 100% solid and foreseen any sloppy writing would exacerbate matters.
This feels suspiciously like "you must have done something to provoke him."
Not really.
Just there are really really shitty people out there who are going to blast any minority character or even non minority character. Therefore a director or producer has a responsibility of care to anyone they hire and should do everything in their power to minimise said back lash to that actor or actress.
This isn't the first time this has happened either. The poor actor that played jar jar got harrassed to hell and poor Jake lloyd ended up having a break down because of backlash he got from the way his role was handled.
I am not excusing those disgustingly "fans". They are pieces of shit. But like or not they are there and not going away.
As such any producer or director needs to plan for that.
Making the actress behind rose tico the Jar Jar binks of the sequel trilogy was careless and opened the poor woman to far more abuse than world of happend if the character had been better handled.

Writers, directors and producers should be writing good , solid and well developed characters anyway.
"Should" but don't always. And they don't deserve it no matter what.
We have had many movies without well-developed characters over the decades. None deserve abuse.

Rian Johnson could have written the most perfect and amazing character, and those same people still would have attacked Kelly Marie Tran. This has absolutely nothing to do with the writing or Rian Johnson, and any attempt to shift the blame anywhere other than the vile people who made those attacks is trying to make excuses for them.
you might not be wrong.. doesn't make you right. Sure, people might have objected to her casting for any number of reason, including the need to hit the Asian demographic. There are also those that hate the character, how she belittles other characters around her, and broadbrushes the serious grey issues of moral rightness in war. They could also hate her actions at the end of the film. I'm not justifying how anyone treated the actress.. (she should not be treated as she was no matter what) but you can't just say that it had nothing to do with the writing. I'm not saying that any reason justifies such behavior.. but it could still be the reason for it

Jack Loyd in Episode one was hounded to near suicide yet he was a white American child.

World doesn't work that way, neither do assholes. There is a subset of folks out there that look for reasons to be offended and to make sure everyone possible can see that they are offended.
Jedi: Fallen Hero? Respawn was working on that before being bought by EA. They were just too far along in the process to throw all that money away.
