Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

No. She forms the Resistance at the end of Bloodline, but the First Order has not yet emerged from the Unknown Regions at that point.
And the Wookieepedia article on the Resistance says they were formed to counter the First Order because the New Republic wouldn't take them seriously.

That's a generalization based on a lack of specific information about the group's activities.

The First Order is formed in the aftermath of the Battle of Jakku (which takes place 5 years after the Battle of Yavin and one year after the Battle of Endor), but they languish in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy for over 2 decades before emerging and rising to prominence sometime following the events chronicled in the novel Bloodline, which take place 28 years after the Battle of Yavin.

The events of Bloodline also detail the reasons and circumstances behind the formation of the Resistance, which, despite its name, is not actually resisting anything at first other than the New Republic's refusal to re-miliatarize itself.

And given that the First Order cannot get to where they were by TFA from nowhere, there would have had to be constant reassembling of power. And if that happened, then Leia and the Republic were dumber than the leaders of Europe in the years leading up to WWII.

How dare they!? How dare they create more storytelling possibilities and not confine themselves to repeating what happened before!!!? The unmitigated gall to expand upon mythology and storytelling-it simply has never been done before! /s

My original comment was not a complaint, but hey, sarcasm, right?

Seriously, Luke's death is not an issue. It is an heroic one (saving people is heroic, especially in Star Wars), it expands upon the Force and demonstrates Luke's understand of Yoda's Jedi teachings in ESB. I fail to see the conflict and see a whole lot of potential.

If you consider a meaningless death on a skype call to be heroic, so be it. He wasn't even there, so he wasn't hurt, yet he died anyway. That's dumb writing.

He died saving what was left of the goddamn Resistance. It wasn't for no reason. Jesus Christ man.
If he hadn't done what he did they would have all died.

It wasn't like a video game, the effort to project himself through the force killed him.
Last time I checked video games don't directly kill people.

Which is why the writing of the scene was so bad. Had Luke not run away because his feelings were hurt, and disappeared for over a decade, maybe the resistance wouldn't have been in such trouble. Had Luke left the planet when asked, he would have been in a better position. Maybe he should have got off his butt and confronted Kylo earlier with Rey, and maybe battled Snoke. At least that was something. Luke dying was a terrible idea, executed even more terribly.

The concept of the First Order is based on the idea of Nazi regime regrouping in Argentina and sticking, more or less out of nowhere, suddenly a generation after the end of World War II.

It's clear that your mind is made up so why discuss it? There are several points of contention, including the fact that Luke did like his teachers did, and felt that he had failed. It's a perfect mirror of what Yoda did in ROTS.

As for his death, the fact that there is the immediate label of "meaningless" and "Skype call" indicates that this conversation is at a dead end.

Guys, I'm not sure why any of you are still replying to @Kirk Prime directly; I've addressed the misconceptions and falsehoods he's latched on to regarding the timeline, but only as a method of spurring the larger conversation.

@fireproof78 , I agree wholeheartedly and I think you and I have a different interpretation about meaningless than others in this conversation. Its very clear, at least to me, that Luke's ForceSkype attempt was, not only a mirror to Poe's distraction at the beginning of the film, but also served to prove him as the greatest of all Jedi.

His act of sacrifice, not only was far from meaningless, as it allowed himself to be something in death he could never allow himself to be in life: a legend. Because of his arrogance. Because of what his actions showed as consequences for the rest of the galaxy. He died, not in a moment of weakness, but in a moment of pure strength, saving his sister and what was left of the idea of peace in the galaxy. He died because he knew the Resistance and freedom from the First Order was far more important than one Jedi. He died knowing the Jedi would live on in Rey. He made that sacrifice.

Some people may interpret that differently, or may choose to outright reject my interpretation and that's their choice. But I for one think it is very clearly there on the screen for all to see.

Agreed. It is wrapped up in so much of the mythology and worldbuilding form the Saga, from Yoda, to Obi-Wan. He didn't need weapons to accomplish his task-he had the Force.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. An Ep IX with Leia/Fisher will be infinitely more profitable than one with a made up story of why she isn't there. See, that was easy.

I'll bet this isn't far from what we'll get. Rey has to be something special, given the set-up in TFA. Perhaps Anakin and his twin brother/sister were separated largely for the same reason as Luke and Leia. Will we see a type of "all of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again"?

What Rian Johnson did to Rey's character in TLJ was simply what he's done since film school: turn everything you think you know upside down, for "shock effect". It's a tired trope. I predict what was said about Rey's parentage story will be seriously retconned in IX (or we'll just find out Kylo Ren was lying to con her into joining him).

Personally, I want to see an Anakin Force Ghost confront Kylo Ren. Has Hayden Christensen been tapped, by chance?

Rey is Kylos twin, the sword of the Jedi, Han knew, because he disagreed with hiding her away in sand planet hell. Uncle Luke knew, and he disagreed too...but they all knew the secret had to be kept, same as he and Leia had been seperated....

Oh and her real names Jaina, and Ben is really called Jacen.
We might as well go whole hog with this.
Boba Fett is going to train Rey in the next movie and give her some Beskar armour, probably Phasmas cast offs. Plasma is of course secretly Fett daughter.
And Luke isn’t really dead, because Mara Jade needs to be written in to win over older fans and lead in to a miniseries...

We've got our first leaked set photos, they show Finn, Chewie, and Poe out in a grassy area with some other Resistance soldiers. Several of the pictures show horses covered in fake long fur with what appear to be mocap markers around there face. I'm a big fan of the creatures in the other movies and shows, so I'm very curious to see what kind of creatures the horses are playing.

Elijah Wood was Frodo, Dominic Monaghan was Merry and Charlie on Lost.

I saw Steve Jackson's Lords of The Rings duology half a dozen times, you're mistaken, he was definitely one of the Frodos. :p
