Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

My initial beliefs (not having read any posts/replies yet):

Warning: spoilers to any existing Disney or Lucasfilm Star Wars film will manifest

1. Ren telling Rey her parents were like my ex was just a means to lure her. It's a cliché, but...
2. "Solo" could be setting up Qira as being Rey's mother, having banged Darth Maul (or at least the talkie toaster he banged because he loved it and always had it repaired with care.)
3. Others have the force beyond the soap opera dynasty of the Skywalker clan.
4a. It is revealed that had Finn flown into the cannon from TLJ, it would have been futile. Rose's deleted scene stripped her idiocy of saving Finn of any background detail/justification.
4b. Since deleted scenes aren't canon, show more of Rose having developing emotions for him or using the deleted scene as a callback.
4c. Ditto for when Finn sees Rey kissing him. I've no problem with a love triangle as a small subplot or hook into episode X since Adam, Daisy, et al, have been perfectly cast despite any nitpicks with the scripts. And the scripts have some fair ideas, it's the rough edges that can be very rough.
5. It is revealed that the map to find Skywalker was used as a distraction so Ren and his Knights could take over the galaxy while the resistance chased wild geese. (Right before the reveal that it's 5 years later and Kylo has won and rules with niceness instead of the evil Palpatine had. This bit in parenthesis is a known leak, but I don't recall reading if the map issue was addressed. Ditto for the other points in this long, tedious list but I will point each instance out where I do cite the leaks.)
6a. DJ has got to return. Great baddie. Don't make him turn good. He's like Han Solo only for the bad guys and not the good guys.
6b. This is because, clearly, his having a convenient ship and prison cell were there as a trap to get Finn and Rose into buying the ruse.
7. Do the job Episode VII should have done and explain how the First Order took over during the gulf of years after the tiny band of rebels took down Palpy's big empire.
8. No more force pulls from reanimated corpses in space, force telekinesis, etc. Actually, the pull was okay. How she managed to survive to consciousness is another issue... the telekinesis of water to Kylo also stretched credibility. Fantasy powers still need some context and rules, otherwise it becomes "Harry Potter on crack".
9. Please let the movies do a little explaining of things. Casual and moderate fans may not know all the comics and tv series that explain Luke's projection or Maul's survival. Granted, a spinoff or sequel could indeed explain those issues as well, but if it's a gamble. If the movie is good then people will come back because they want to know. If the movie isn't starting to look good then they needed to add closure to be on the safe side. Maul was left hanging and in a movie that, while getting some mixed and good reviews (which, considering the problems during its making, is genuinely remarkable in of itself and enough for me to go see it), isn't the outright extravaganza everyone was hoping for.
10. Kylo gets a new mask but keeps the cool electronically-modified voice. Adam Driver is great either way (seriously, the new movies have rough edges but so did the OT and Kathleen Kennedy is being a bit unfairly treated despite some of the dumber instances.)

Lastly, I'll end on this - it's too good not to include as it's one of many reminders why the OT is also loaded with flaws and rough edges:

(at 2:17, Leia seals the deal. She's always known. Talk about a cold shower... erm, :guffaw:)

Still, I've yet to see a Disney movie that is worse than the prequels, if for no other reason than not having extremely clunky dialogue. (I blame it on the sand. It gets everywhere. Del Tarrant told us so), though the prequels also went so far overkill with the action-over-substance nonsense to the point I popped in a 1990 CGI extravaganza in VHS format, "The Mind's Eye", and got more out of that than wtaching General Grievance whipping out 4 light sabers to mix a martini with them all while Obi just stands there in mindless awe instead of taking the high road and slicing his power wire to save the audience several minutes of theatrical boredom, Yoda bouncing off the walls, hover skateboards over fiery hot lava yet neither of them were breaking a sweat (is the Force really that good or are they just a pair of Marty Stu McFlys?)

This sounds like a good plan to me. I would love Snoke's second apprentice to show up and there to be a conflict between Kylo and his Knights, and this other apprentice.

Snoke had little buildup in VII, none in VIII (the weakest part of the film IMHO), so the best they can do is to retroactively put in some importance. Sounds like a cool conflict, between another apprentice and Kylo's band.

As odd as it sounds, Abrams is probably the guy to mend the fences that Johnson has been perceived to have torn down.

Ironic, as JJ's known for taking scenes from older movies/tv episodes and turning them into movies as overly long homages that add nothing to the saga but live off the shallow hype and nostalgia. At least with Trek2009, to a lesser extent STID, and clearly with SW ep VII. The moment Han scoffed at "yet another death star" (paraphrased) I was close to walking out of the theater... Templates are one thing, and relevant TO a franchise to a point, but a little obfuscation is nice and Rian did that obfuscating and subverting of expectations rather well.

Both of them still have some great ideas. Ep VII won me over with its characters and potential therein, which is more important than 3 hours of "trade federation talk" followed by a zillion CGI critters with whippy lightsabers bouncing around under the guise of "more on screen is better, audiences never have or need emotional investment! Just big shiny things and lots of them!!" And Boba Fett's replacement voice, which lacks the cadence and timber and sense of threat that the original clearly had. Took me a while to figure it out but that's another story.

(But if JJ did VIII's writing, how many who got what they wanted, instead of expectations subverted, then scream it was then too predictable and stale?)

The whole midichlorian crap and the idea that you have to be connected to someone important to use the Force just makes the galaxy too small.

When was it ever said that you have to be connected to someone important to use the Force? Midichlorian testing indicates otherwise. Seems like a strawman.

As for the contention that midichlorians somehow make the galaxy too small, midichlorians are just the details behind Force sensitivity. It was already true in the OT that some people are strong with the Force while others are not ( otherwise, to say that someone is strong with the Force is effectively meaningless ). Thus we get the importance of Luke as emphasized strongly in TESB by such luminaries as Ben, Vader, and Palpatine. Midichlorians change nothing in this context.

Just as Episode I took place ten years before the rest of the Prequel Trilogy, Episode IX will take place ten years after the rest of the Sequel Trilogy. Some time after Leia has passed away, the Knight of Ren will be will be locked in mortal combat with the Knights of Rey in the ultimate battle for the fate of the galaxy...

Other than the ten years part this sounds pretty cool.

Will there be an announcer? And will Lando be their taking bets?

Maybe not ten years but a time jump of some kind seems like the easiest way to Address Carrie's passing and Leia's absence.

Plus it would give Rey time to train her army of broom wielding stable boys.

3 years, 5, 10, 20. It doesn’t matter to me but it makes sense for many reasons for their to be a leap.

I think a time jump is likely, and with JJ back at the helm, look for a more conventional story that apes some major elements of the previous films.

Snoke's second apprentice is more than likely being reserved for the upcoming 'Resistance' animated series (set prior to TFA). If there is a big reveal about Snoke being, say, Darth Plagueis, that's also where it'll be revealed (unless JJ just has Ghost Luke toss it out there at some point in IX).

I could go with either a 5 or 10 year time jump, but I'm leaning more toward 10 to account for the actors' aging (particularly Lando's if BDW is returning).

I keep picturing an older bearded Kylo (looking kinda like John Wick) sitting on the Imperial Throne on Coruscant. A Macbeth story arc minus Lady Macbeth (unless she's a still stubbornly-not-dead Phasma); he sold his soul to win the galaxy, but now that he's Emperor the ghosts of the past won't let him be. JJ spoke of tying the three trilogies together, and hallucinations on Kylo's part (caused/encouraged by Ghost Luke?) would be a made-to-order way to get some exposition across.

I figure there will be a time jump. Rey is rebuilding the Jedi as new Force users appear and go to her. Maybe the First Order is trying to wipe them out. The First Order has expanded to cover a major portion of the galaxy, not Empire level, but enough that they pretty much run things. The Resistance is growing, thanks to the legend of Luke’s standoff with the AT-AT and Kylo, along with the word of his last apprentice Rey restoring the Jedi, spreads across the galaxy. I expect Luke to show up, not so much to inspire Rey, but to speak to Kylo Ren. Kylo is full on evil now, but Luke does manage to torture what’s left of his conscience. Maybe given him a message from Han, the idea being that all life joins the Force in death, but only a few can appear to the living. Leia is probably dead, maybe make a pretty big deal out of it, like she’s basically a saint to them now. I don’t know if they should show her as a Force ghost at the end or not. Maybe just show Luke walk into a light and there are two figures that are meant to be Han and Leia embrace him, all after leaving the fate of the galaxy in the hands of Rey and her new Jedi.

I just had a thought. Given that even in the Legends EU the New Republic was constantly fighting Imperial Remnant powers to idea of the First Order taking majority control is not that far fetched. All it takes is several sympathetic systems to throw behind the First Order and its done.

In the books, the First Order grows out of several systems in the New Republic preferring a stronger central government.

That part makes sense. I'm just thinking that some systems through in behind the First Order after the New Republic was destabilized.

Yeah, I could see some systems just wanting order and not caring who it was. Especially ones with heavy crime or the more populated systems. A few would remain loyal. But given the turnover in governments, both the Empire and New Republic lasted about 20 something years, others might not see much of a difference in who is in charge.

People would be well-served, I think, to "check their expectations at the door" in regards to JJ Abrams "undoing" the reveal of Rey's parentage or Snoke being cut down like a chump.
