Episode Eight Pre-Release Thread

I'm curious as to how they will deal with Carrie Fisher's death in episode 8. I know they've already finished filming, but I wonder if they will go back and change some scenes in this film to fit a new story, or if all story changes will be in episode 9.

I did read an article a couple of days ago that had what could be considered spoilers for episode 8 and/or 9. It's nothing the average fan couldn't have guessed at anyway, but I'll put it in spoiler tags nonetheless.
The article had some source (not sure how reliable, so take it with a grain of salt) that said there are/were two major scenes involving Leia that were going to take place sometime in episode 8 or 9, that may have to be totally rethought now. The first was a reunion between Leia and Luke, and the second is a confrontation between Leia and Kylo Ren. I would guess that the reunion is probably already filmed for episode 8, but the confrontation would likely not happen until episode 9. In which case they will really have to rethink that one...the more I think about it, the more I think that it's very possible that in the current story plan Leia had a substantial role in turning Kylo Ren back to the light side. This is just completely my own guess, but it would seem fitting for a mother/son connection to play a significant role.

Yeah, I was wondering if something along the lines of that last part of your spoiler might have been planned too.

I wonder if Jedha will figure into the film. With Luke's supposed quest to find the lost Jedi Temple, will he revisit this moon and the ruins of the city?... if there's anything left. It could at least be given a nod in the dialog. Linking the new trilogy to the anthology series seems like a probable move (instead of just retroactive justification for things in the first six movies).

I never thought of that, and it would be pretty cool. Even if we don't see it in the movie, I would make sense that we at least hear about Luke visiting it during his travels.

The city was clearly vaporised and everything within at least a few dozen miles was reduced to rubble and then launched into low orbit. Unless there's another site on the far side of the planet, I don't think there will be any ruins left to visit.

It would probably still have quite of bit of Force presence left, so it still might be worth visiting for someone checking out significant locations in Jedi history. Someone as strong as Luke could probably get all sorts of crazy visions.
Thinking about it more, even more than a post-Empire Jedha, I'd actually be more interested in a prequel era or earlier Jedha. What was it like during the height of the Jedi Order's power? Did anything happen there during the Clone Wars?

^^
He can use the Force to rebuild it.
That's not how it works, kid!

You know I wouldn't put it past the EU's version of post RotJ Luke. ;)

Pretty sure a post-RO Jedha would be an inhospitable hell world. The Death Star's attack seems like the equivalent of a major extinction level impact event. The moon wasn't destroyed, but from a habitation standpoint, it may as well be.
The site of NiJedha itself would likely still be a molten Caldera for decades, if not centuries. The atmosphere would be filled with particulate matter, blotting out the already cold sun for at least as long and the orbit and rotation would also be decidedly perturbed.

I get the impression that even by the Clone Wars it was something of a backwater, visited only by pilgrims, archaeologists and scholars. No telling when the Jedi last had a significant presence there. Could have been before the last Sith War for all we know, maybe even longer ago than that.

I didn't realize that, I thought it had just gotten that way after the fall of the Order.
It'd certainly gotten worse under Imperial occupation, but those giant statues looked like they'd been toppled centuries ago.

In my head I sort of imagine it as tying into the last war with the Sith. If maybe during the era of Sith rule, Jedah was the location of the Jedis' main temple and once the Sith were defeated and the (new?) Republic founded, they moved away from there to Coruscant. Possibly symbolic of them moving away from their literal spiritual home and purpose to sit on top of a wellspring of evil (yes, there's one of those under the great temple, believe it or not) and become corrupted?

That's just my pure speculation though. The neglect could just as easily have been gradual or happened much further in the past.

There's a new rumor going around that we might see Convorees on Ahch-To. Since it seems like they might have some kind of connection to The Force, I could see them being there.

That's an oddly specific rumour for a film in this stage of development, given how well the secret of the Ghost & Chopper appearing in Rogue One was kept.

That said, I've had a mental image for a while now of Luke taking Rey to the old temple to meet a very old yet familiar Togruta, chatting away with a trio of equally familiar force ghosts. Something about the idea of Ahsoka being the new Yoda just tickles me somehow. ;)

Be funny of Luke used the Force to make Rey drop the saber, and then have her start to walk away.

If Kylo turns back to the light in this trilogy, it raises the question of addressing culpability and punishment for the fiendish things he did while under the Dark Side's influence. The point was moot with Vader because he died right after he turned good again.
