Enterprise Novels: My First Taste

I must admit there was one bit in Kobayshi Maru where I thought Archer's characterization was way off:

When the distress call goes up from the ECS Kobayashi Maru, and a bunch of shifty things are going on all at once, Archer thinks "What the fuck?" to himself. I don't bat an eyelid at swearing, but it just seemed totally wrong for Archer (who didn't swear under torture, when torturing others or when killing unarmed civilians), utterly gratuitous, quite childishly executed and stupid. If they were gonna say "fuck" in Trek for the first time ever, it would have been a much better fit for the Trip/T'Pol reunion in the shuttle ;)

I vaguely remember one of the writers saying that they didn't write that line, and that it was inserted by the editors after the final draft had already been submitted.

I too remember thinking WTF after reading that... I really didn't see the need for that line, still don't.

^ Actually those lines did seem a little odd for Archer. But Trip swearing? Being an old southern boy myself, I didn't even think twice when he did it. :rommie:

I just finished reading KM today. It was good. I thought TGTMD was better though. I was a little annoyed that the book just ended without a climax. I hate when they do that.

But I have to tell you, the funniest lines in the book was when Trip reaches up and his forehead ridges spook him. He says, "It was rough enough for his grandad to have washed his overalls on." I laughed over that for twenty minutes. It sounds like something I would say.

I do have something that irritated the crap out of me about the novel. I admit I tend to be a little militant when it comes to the NX-01 these days. I guess I know her better than I really should. (See my link below if you don't know what I am talking about.) Anyway, when Archer figures out T'Pol is gone and he runs up to B Deck to make sure... I almost put the book down. T'Pol's quarters are on E Deck. This has been shown or explained four different times since the writer's made that B Deck boo boo in Shockwave, Part II. I don't know why but it really really annoyed me. I know it shouldn't but it did. (And if any of the Relaunch writers are reading this, feel free to use my website to help with the interiors of the ship. It will keep me from putting your books down.)

(I was reading the TNG novel "Vendetta" the other day and it had Riker sitting in a chair with it turned backwards. Granted he did this all the time in Ten-Forward but they had him do it in one of the conference room chairs... which have been impossible to do. The back is to high. That also bugged the crap out of me. Maybe I expect to much.)

Those looking for a good Trip and T'Pol reunion will be VERY pleased by Beneath the Raptors Wing

With that said, I gotta go back and read Koboyashi Maru, I somehow went straight from TGTMD to Raptors Wing.

Hmmmm... In that case I might continue to forge ahead despite my lack of enthusiasm for this work.

I went looking for TGTMD today in some used bookstores (we just bought a house so I need to save every cent I can for other things) and... none of them had it. Or any ENT novels. There were piles and piles of TOS, TNG, DS9 and New Frontier novels but not one single ENT novel in any of them.

Hmm. Thanks for the tip. I get almost all of my DVDs via Amazon but I honestly never even thought about ordering books. Silly me.

I just finished reading Beneath the Raptor's wing again I sure wish the second book In Shariel's jaws was coming out next month instead of next year. It's seems like a long time to wait for the next book.Since it's a long complex story that has to be told it's understandable their would be reedits and re writes before they publish it.

I've read about third of TGTMD, in a couple of hours, but only because I hoped that it would get better.
Till now story seems quite mild and not engaging at all. It seems like it's enough to read review and there's nothing bigger that actual telling and describing will bring to the story.
Does it get better?

I've finished TGTMD today and I am not disappointed at least not as much as I thought I would be. Maybe it was just that I am not used to read ST.
It definitely got better, and I could really "see" it all happening, especially because they did very good job in synchronizing book with the TATV.
What I disliked most was T'Pol's characterisation. At times it was brilliant but sometimes I simply couldn't see her doing/saying what she did.
I liked Trip's part, they made all that romulan spy story really well and very convincing.
Again no Hoshi or Reed or Travis, I wished they gave them bigger role, at least in the book ;)
