ENTERPRISE design in the new film? (How many changes?)

www.iesb.net is reporting that "multiple sources" say the exterior of the Enterprise has been "redesigned."

Which is about as vague and undefined a statement as one could hope for.

Therefore, our only appropriate response is: Screaming Panic! RET-KH-A-A-A-A-A-N!

Don't worry, Dennis.

That probably just means that the Enterprise has been designed all over again from scratch... but in exactly the same way.

Redesigned? No problem. As long as it still looks exactly the same. Whew. That was a close one.

Are you kidding! It clearly means that they've nuBSG'd the "Grey Lady!"

We are so screwed! Game over, man, game over!

Goddamned Berman and Braga! Don't tell me they're not involved somehow!

I hope everyone doesn't give you the response you want with the intesnity you're looking for all at once.

Listen to me, Dennis. Listen to me very  carefully.

"Redesigned" just means designed again.

Designed twice.

That's it!

My... er, the beautiful lady was already designed once. Perfectly. The first time.

And now that beautiful lady has been designed again. Perfectly. Just like first time. NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

And Simon Pegg looks and sounds exactly like James Doohan.

So, we're fine.

We're fine.

Deep breaths, deep breaths.

We're fine.

Gabe Koerners Re-Imagined Enterprise

I wouldn't mind seeing this in the new movie.

Click on the link for awesome images.

I would imagine we will see something similar to this in the new movie. Infact I wouldn't be suprised if its this one.

Nope, not at all. As some alternate Enterprise, a refit Constitution, fine, but not THE Enterprise. That ship, in fact, is exactly what I do NOT want to see.

I feel that all those holding out for an untouched or near-untouched version of the original NCC-1701 are going to be disappointed ... based on rumours and recent comments from people involved the ship has definitely been re-designed and will look different.

Which means, I won't be watching.

It's official: Trek is dead.

Probably so.

That said, it may not be much more different than, say, the TMP ship was from the TOS ship. Maybe.

That's not to say that we shouldn't panic, gnash our teeth and condemn everyone involved, though. I mean, what else would we do?

Old Trek's been dead for a while now. NuTrek may be pretty entertaining.

I won't quite go there. But I would be disappointed. I'm yet to hear an argument for a big redraw that convinces me. But then, I was expecting it to look the same in 1979.

If they fuck with the design to make it "better," it will simply show that these folks--the geniuses behind Felicity and Transformers and the studio which guided ENT to be as creative and ground-breaking as possible even over the objections of such maverick visionaries as Bermaga--have their heads up their asses like 90% of Hollywood and 85% of the bovine general public. Will it be cause for wailing and gnashing of teeth? Widespread panic? Claims of raped childhood? Hardly. Star Trek stopped being anything more than a mild diversion ages ago. There are far more interesting entertainments out there, both on and off the screen (the New Yorker publishes high quality short fiction every week; The Wire is set to begin its final season on HBO in 2008) and in and out of the genre (there's a backlog of great SF from 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s I've yet to read or see and greats like Varley, Haldeman and Gibson, to name but a few, are still writing) to occupy my mind. More and more, I'm beginning to hope this movie does suck so I can wash my hands of Star Trek for good.

They have re-designed it once, the refit. Why is this so different? Did you stop watching in 1978 or whenever you learned the Enterprise got re-designed?

Gabe Koerners Re-Imagined Enterprise

This is what I've been calling the 'anime enterprise'. A terrific design, but far too busy. To stylized for a more realistic look that I would hope the new film will provide.

Certainly I hope for a radical redesign of the ship. I don't see any reason not to 're-imagine' Star Trek, just as ST:TMP and ST:TWoK made huge design changes.

And really, as much as I love the original designs I certainly don't expect this movie to emulate 40 year old sci-fi designs beyond a mild homage. We don't even live in the same century anymore. Heck, can we just get over the Eugenics Wars of 1996 and move on? ;)

Very seldom do I find myself in agreement with you Plum but I am behind you 100% here.

Why anyone would expect for this team, just like every other Trek production team has in the past and shall in the future make their own mark on the look and feel of the Trek 'verse I don't understand.

Its a fictional world, therefore more then open to reinterpretation - they'd be creatively lazy to just copy and paste old designs.

That being said I'm betting this Enterprise echoes more of what we saw in ToS then any of the movies have before. We'll probably be able to look at it and see how they added a layer of function where none was really before.

ten to one some bitching right now are going to "fall in love" with the new look.

Yes it will, ladies and gentlemen - right here, in this very forum and all across the Internet.
