Is Spock Chief Science Officer in this? Perhaps the person sat at the Science Station was the CSO so had a higher right to be sat there than Spock did.

Michael and Sarek seemed to think so in the premiere when they heard Pike was beaming over with "his science officer." Upon finding out Connolly beamed over, Michael was all "where the hell is Spock?"

Spock is the Enterprise third-in-command ("The Cage"), he can bounce dude off the science console if he wants.

That dude was one of their artists, and posted a pic on Instagram about how pleased he was to be the Enterprise's backup science officer. I love how extras post selfies on the sets as soon as their episode airs, it's so fun!

Implicitly he is the Chief Science Officer, but is there any Cage dialogue to support it? Same for third in command?
The need to "modernize" sets for a current audience is a good reason to avoid prequels in Trek.

Bland as in uninspired. It's a mashup of NX-01 and TMP details applied to the TOS shape, with nothing new aside from the bifurcated warp nacelle pylons and squished profile.

You must be an Architect. Every Architect I've worked with are the only people I've ever known to use the word "bifurcate". And they use it ad nauseam.

The more I study the pictures of the set, the more impressed I am.

Under all the tinsel, it is very close to the original TOS bridge design. My guess right now is that the diameter of the set at the inner edge of the surrounding consoles is probably about four feet greater than Jefferies' design, maybe less. The "access corridor" running behind the consoles, into which the original turbolift alcove has been incorporated, adds several feet to the outer diameter. The station heights may be about the same, maybe a couple of inches taller.

i voted "like it" but they could've toned the kitsch down a little. looks like a good set, but throwing a bunch of jelly buttons and multicolored panels in there doesn't suddenly bring it in line with TOS, so why abandoned the aesthetic they'd already developed in the series?

I'm not sure how it's abandoning it. It's not the first time that styles have different between different ship classes in the franchise.

Plus the Enterprise is at least 10 years older than the Discovery. Maybe that's just how ships in the 2240s looked.

The fact that he’s in the captain’s chair is all I need.
The only other on-screen contenders (who had speaking parts), would have been Tyler or the geologist; Pitcairn and Garrison were CPOs. The pitch made Tyler sound like what would have become Chekov in terms of youthful impetuosity. Also, they lost a yeoman and two unnamed crew members on Rigel. So who else could call themselves the acting captain?

Unless the third officer was in his bunk during the whole episode.

"Like it" is definitely the right set of words. It's pretty much what I'd expect from DSC: many many great elements, a few not so much, not brilliant, but brilliantly executed, frustratingly close to greatness.

abandon might be too harsh. the UI designer has said they designed the enterprise's interfaces to look those aboard shenzhou and discovery. but they also threw those TOS blinkies in there that definitely contrast (clash) with that established style. i think the set would look better without the TOS homages. it in itself is an homage, they didn't have to get campy with it. but that's just my personal taste.

Spock was probably third in command in "The Cage" because he took over the ship after Number One was captured near the end. Other possible explanations include "quickie mutiny" and "Spock is fourth in command; Colt is third," but I don't think those are as likely.
