Enterprise bridge....2nd turbolift?

Which is why you do a reboot. Then you can go hog wild.

Personally, I would find the confusion of another reboot less preferable than the minor discomfort of a made-for-2019 visual retweaking.

The changes made to the Enterprise between the films were certainly less jarring than the rehaul of 2009 (which I enjoyed, but still).

Photoshop or from the next episode? Either way, it looks better this way and more like the set was presented in "The Cage".

That's a good observation. Did the Enterprise ever go to red alert in "The Cage"?

Many fan blueprints over the years have had a similar outer ring, just without the access via the missing station. Ostensibly most have considered it access to the back of the bridge consoles for servicing.
It could also be a little inside joke? If I remember correctly there actually WAS space behind the rear consoles on the TOS-Set...just not visibile on screen. It was used for rear projection of stuff to the consoles..but it ended up beeing used very rarely because the SAG or something insited on a seperate payed projectionist for each projector.

The entire backs of the Enterprise stations were all exposed. That's the way sets are almost always built.

I think even without all the red the bridge looks pretty awesome …
