ENTER: Tv & Media Avatar Contest: Brilliant But Cancelled

Saga

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
the theme this time around is brilliant but cancelled. i'm sure all of us have loved a tv show at one point, only to see it canceled. the usual rules apply. and no Science Fiction or Fantasy. good luck!

NBC's Life - a first season shortened by the writers' strike, cancelled durin' the second season.

No sci fi or fantasy? You don't want 20 Firefly avatars? :p

Brimstone was also a pretty cool show. :(

Kings, short lived retelling of the biblical story of David and his rise to power all set in a modern world. Ian McShane was brilliant as King Saul and the rest of the cast was very entertaining. Sadly, it never found an audience.

Wanted to do Tim Daly's "Eyes" but nothing really stood out.

from that show's Wikipedia entry:
In many ways, the show was meant to be a historical fantasy in the vein of Campbell's 1993–1994 western series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. and the 1965–1969 adventure show The Wild Wild West. The swashbuckling Jack Stiles character also resembles the flamboyant Autolycus ("the King of Thieves"), a recurring role Campbell played on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess.

I'm not exactly going out on a limb here by saying you never actually saw the show or even knew anything about it, did you?

OMG! Is that Lord of the Rings? Or Harry Potter? It's so fantasy! Look at all the magic spells and elves and dragons!

IMDB also describes the show as "Adventure | Action | Comedy | Fantasy"

I guess no one there ever saw the show either.:rolleyes:

Oh, and here's the product description of the DVD from Amazon.com:

  • Jack of All Trades, starring Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) as Jack Stiles, and Angela Dotchin as his supervisor, Emilia Rothschild, is a campy, post-Revolutionary War-era comedy series that's fun because it's so bizarre. In each of the twenty-two episodes, Jack and Emilia, hired by Thomas Jefferson as undercover spies, fight French Imperialism while encountering history's greatest political celebrities. In a dynamic reminiscent of Moonlighting, Emilia's feminist savvy for espionage is repeatedly undermined by Jack's dumb-but-sweet naïvete. Their brains and brawn combo is unbeatable, as they continuously foil conquest plans hatched by French Governor Croque (Stuart Devenie) and his cousin, Napolean Bonaparte (Verne Troyer, a.k.a Mini Me). No one is sacred in this series: French plans for takeover are always obviously revealed in one idiotic swoop, as if the Governor and Napolean are The Joker and The Penguin in vintage Batman episodes. Jack, master of one-liners like, "Beat it turkey, I’m having Thanksgiving," pokes fun at America's love of corny jokes. Plots, too, are ridiculous. In "X Marquis the Spot," Jack and Emilia visit Marquis de Sade's "Agony Island" in search of King George's crown. De Sade, clad in absurd red and black leathers, forces everyone to wear leashes and engage in S&M master/slave tactics. In "Shark Bait," Jack and Emilia enjoy a submarine ride in a machine that looks like a giant, Victorian fish, when their sub is swallowed by Leonardo da Vinci's great, great, great, great grandson, Captain Nardo's bigger sub. Scripted fantasy elements commingle with slapstick humor, satire, and physical comedy in this odd show destined for cult classic status. With Sam Raimi as executive producer and Eric Gruendemann and Josh Becker, of Hercules and Xena fame, as directors, Jack of All Trades got that extra dose of twisted, off-color humor needed to make it a truly original show. --Trinie Dalton

Damn you, Trinie Dalton, how dare you review a show that you've obviously never seen?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Are we limiting this to a first season cancellation? Up to and including a full season?

I mean, My Name Is Earl had 4 seasons, but then got canned. And I thought that was a brilliant show, in my mind anyway.

I think "early" cancellation is the idea--so Earl would qualify. Deadwood went 3 seasons (2 and a half?), Boomtown 1 and a half, Kings just 1 and Shark got 2.

Of course, it's all the OP's call, as this is his thread.

Earl is fine. doesn't matter if it ran one season or 5, if you feel it was brilliant and canceled before its time then it qualifies.

EDIT: Ah whoops, another Arrested Development one was posted while I was making this one. Oh well, they're different enough and I put enough work into this one that I'm keeping mine :p
