That's an interpretive illustration, but it does depict a real medical condition, so I'm fine with it.

Okay, here we go:

A baby in the NICU. Over the last few decades, technologies to save sick and premature babies have advanced unbelievably. When I worked at St. Margaret's and Boston Medical Center, we had babies born in the low 20s who survived and graduated (we used to have NICU reunions, outdoor fairs with rides and games, where those graduates would come back-- by the time the hospital closed, some were in their teens). It is also now possible to perform surgery, including corrective heart surgery, on fetuses before they are even born. Babies who would have had no chance of survival less than half a century ago can now grow up to live a normal life.
