Enterprise gets caught in a spatial anomaly after diverting course to study the phenomenon. Although able to chart the space within the anomaly, the crew discovers that their efforts to escape are fruitless, as no matter which direction they attempt to move, Enterprise is always the center point. Adding to the danger of the situation, as the ship moves, different parts Enterprise appear to be experiencing the flow of time at different rates. One attempt to move caused the warp core to be running at high warp for a month straight, causing severe damage.

After gathering enough data, the crew realizes that the time differentials can be mapped as well, and are able to project a course to "move" through the pockets of normal space-time, allowing them to escape the anomaly. As they leave, Enterprise launches a buoy into with instructions on how to escape, assuming that it will remain at its center much as the ship did.

Next episode: "Chariot Wheels"

"Chariot Wheels" - Archer is contact by a Section 31 agent named Stillwell. There is a species of super geniuses called the Pakleds that have just achieved warp drive. But the concern is that they are very much like the Augments, as their intellect is off the charts, breaking many established Vulcan records. And there are fears that they will be an imperialist power once they develop a fleet. Stillwell wants Archer to release a virus that will significantly reduce their genetically enhanced intellect and gives him the formula to do to, codenamed Chariot Wheels. Archer is also warned that if he doesn’t comply, Section 31 will find another captain that agrees, as they have options across the Coalition of Planets

As Archer, T’Pol and Phlox morally agonize over this assignment, a new MACO graduate - Private Noonien Singh – gets wind of the plans. Personally believing that Augments are misunderstood, and this misunderstanding has tarnished the family name, he steals the virus believing that he could make the Pakleds even smarter than they currently are and validate Keneclius’s theory of omnipotent Augments in the process. And he gets a surprising supporter in Mayweather, who is assisting him as genetic engineering helped cure a childhood disability of his brother Paul on the Horizon. It all leads to a heartstopping chase over the world of the Pakled’s homeworld as the NX-01 pursue the shuttlepod that Mayweather and Private Noonien Singh have taken.

On Vulcan, Jonathan Archer attends the funeral of a young Vulcan named Sulan. As the service ends he approached by T'Pol. She was unaware that Archer knew Sulan, a very minor scientist working at the Vulcan Science Academy. Sulan had died in a accident at his home. Archer explains that he and Sulan met years ago, when both were just boys.

We flashback to Archer as boy. His parents are packing up their house in Upstate New York in preparation to move to the San Francisco Bay Area. Archer is upset to leave and is sulking around the house complaining about leaving his friends. His parents try to cheer him up and say he will meet new friends and make new memories. Soon San Francisco will be home. Archer is having none of it and continues his sulking. In his father's home office he sees a model of the engine his father is working on and knocks it off the desk. He says how much he hates that stupid engine and that his father loves his work more than him. His parents admonish him and he runs out of the the house and into the woods nearby.

Archer wanders the woods still in a bad mood. He suddenly realizes he lost. At home his parents get worried and they call the authorities for a search.

Archer is having a miserable time of it until he happens upon a clearing. There he sees an old fashion telescope set up and a small camp. Famished he finds some rations and stuffs himself. Then the taste hits him and he throws up

From out of the woods a Vulcan boy, Sulan, appears and makes a dry joke about Vulcan food not being to everyone's taste. Archer isn't pleased to see the Vulcan. He associates Vulcans with his father's job and the reason they are moving to San Francisco. Soon Archer is overcome by curiosity about the telescope. He takes a peek and is astounded. Soon Sulan is pointing out stars and talking about the planets around them. Archer makes a connection to his father's work and begins talking up his father. Sulan is actually impressed and intrigued. They have a good time ( or as good as Vulcan can)

The search party finds them and Archer is reunited with his parents. He apologizes to his father for breaking the model and on the way home peppers his father with questions about space, warp drives and engineering.

Back in the present day, Archer explains that Sulan was the one who opened his eyes about space exploration and the role his father and himself could have in it.

T'Pol also slowly develops a blinding headache and other symptoms, with no apparent cause. The outpost is in fact populated by individuals who have been taking a serum to enhance their mental abilities to ward off threats, but it may have enhanced the latent evil streak in one of them instead. Reed is a convenient scapegoat, and T'Pol is a threat to that individual's continued freedom.
