I'm at Chapter 10, and I'm wondering what happened to our lovable Chief Engineer?
Scotty was tough as nails when he needed to be; he would never be one to give up.
Star Trek V showed him in an uncharacteristically comic manner; the Relics TNG episode gave a somewhat realistic portrayal as a man out of his time (a time where he was considered a legend)...
However, Engines of Destiny makes our friend to be a self-pitying man who would risk the universe for one man: Jim Kirk.
(A review on Amazon.com brought up an interesting point as to why wouldn't he want to rescue Peter, his nephew? Or even, aside Peter, Mira Romaine?)
Scotty was close to the ship's engines, and/or a gal (usually an engineer) who caught his eye. There never was a sense that he and Kirk were that close...even though they've been through 'life and death' together. Even so, I would think Scotty would be a bit more 'thoughtful.'
The novel even has Scotty (in his self-pity) wallowing in alcohol.
