Ender's Game

I'm sure I've seen Card express pro-immigration sentiments, as well as love for the Brazilian culture where once served as missionary. Also, his books have plenty of non-Americans portrayed as heroes. I strongly disagree with some of Card's opinions, but may I ask what you are referring to when you say he is xenophobic?

He has Op-Ed materials for Morman websites that show increasing levels of homophobia and, IIRC, racism over the years. Plus some of his later writings (such as his story for Doug Chiang's Robota) seem to display a misogynistic bent.

It's a pity, because his older books and his introduction to the anniversary edition of Ender's Game appear to come from a very compassionate and level-headed man; one of the jacket blurbs on Speaker (I think it was) referred to him as an author whose "heart bleeds" for the suffering of humanity. Nevertheless, he's a very outspoken bigot in other venues.

Another one of his books I highly recommend is Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus.

Agreed, that was an excellent book, enjoyed it a lot.

he's definitely out there a bit personally, but i pretty much ignore that in favor of just reading the books, and not involving myself with his politics. A little heavy-handed on occasion in the books, but nothing too bad, or that can't be glossed over.

Another book that just came out recently that was good was Ender In Exile, which basically picked up the end of Ender's Game, and followed him through a bit of his "wandering" phase. Showed him a bit more grown up, but not at Speaker for the Dead levels, and before humanity turned on him for the Buggers. Enjoyed that one...

Rumor is that he's got another one going that will be a sequel to the whole series, picking up after Children of the Mind, and tying in the Shadow series.

Basically, have to imagine that it'll be Bean or his kid (the ones that took off at the end of the Shadow series), coming out of hyperspace at last, and working with NuPeter and company to wrap things up...

Yeah, I already know about his controversial views in other areas. It was just Harvey's xenophobia claim that made me raise an eyebrow.

all this hyperbole is interesting.... but he's asking about enders game... not any of the subsequent books... or did he change the geist if the thread?

I really enjoyed Ender's Game, I've probably read it half a dozen times since elementary school. I enjoyed Speaker and Xenocide too, but the new Shadow series has turned me off of Card's work. Plodding and repetitive IMHO, and this was before I found out that he'd advocated putting gays in camps.

I enjoy the Shadow series for the characters, but it went in such a different direction than any of the Ender books that I have a hard time caring about it.

9-year olds discussing politics is not my idea of fun.

I don't know why you would let that kind of stuff prevent you from reading any more of his work. Just because you read his book doesn't mean you have to like the guy.

I don't particularly want to support some guy who has openly said that his work is better than Star Wars and Star Trek authors work and that his work is better than anything on televsion. That's just pushing it a little too far.
