Canadian Idol had 4. It's no better or worse than 3.

What was even better, they rotated who spoke first. That way each of them had to risk being the first one who said they didn't like it. Opinions were more honest that way. You notice Paula never said someone was bad unless Randy had already said it first?

American Idol is a mess with 4 judges because the show can't figure out how to time things, and of course won't make short commercials.

Don't watch Idol, but Ellen is an interesting choice. I'll be interested in hearing what her "thing" is as a judge.
