Editorial on ST:IX (James Cawley)

If there's any conflict of interest going on, it's really only resulted in Cawley being exceedingly diplomatic on the matter. Let's not forget that, at least as far as fan films go, he's the one in charge of the project with the highest profile, which makes him a juicy target for a copyright infringement suit should the regime at Paraborg turn less than cordial to such efforts. He's on the knife edge, and as such, occasionally playing nice with the studio is to be expected; to do otherwise would be suicidal.

It did take a while, though, for him to come clean on how he really feels about the redesigns.

Not saying he's sold out, but he seems a little bit reluctant to lock phasers than I suspect he would be normally.

Oh please!!

Why doesn't it ever occur to any of you that he may actually mean what he says? Not everyone is as cynical as you are.

I'm totally deaf when it comes to Cawley. I'll not voice my concerns here though..this is not the place..let me say I'm not a big fan of his, the direction he is taking with his stories..

I'll never forgive him for killing Chekov. (I'm kinda kidding here. Though it was kinda dumb, too.)

Really? I thought it was the second best death scene in the whole of Star Trek (Spock's death in The Wrath of Khan being my favorite with Jake Sisko's death in The Visitor on the third position). And Chekov is my favorite out of the secondary characters of TOS!

Cawley is compromised. He has a cameo, he has a "gentleman's agreement" with Paramount. He's a mouthpiece and nothing more.

No.

I know him. You don't.

The characterizations we're reading about are as low brow and juvenile as Knight Rider 2008. Trek used to be about something. :borg:

This looks to be about as much as "Star Trek" ever really was, back when it was good - before OCD cases started chattering about "Gene's vision" and the "Star Trek philosophy" and going all sercon on the thing.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone noticed that dru and April, two of the most vocal opponents of the new Trek movie, have their postings plastered with anti-Obama rhetoric? I'm not saying that their political views have anything to do with their views on the movie, but the irony is too delicious to ignore. The fact that they are against it gives me much more hope about it. Change has come to America. Now let's see it happen with Star Trek. :)

I'll also speak up in favor of leaving U.S. politics a topic for other forums. We've got plenty of real Trek stuff to get excited over in here, as it is.

My ambitions in general these days extend to having a cup of coffee this Saturday with my best friend, and helping out various members of my family. I divide my copious free time between socializing, working on some personal projects and wasting too much time sparring with morons long distance (it's an addiction, it really is). I am old. I will die before most of you. I take some pleasure in knowing that certain people will be puffing themselves up and obsessively trying to prove themselves "right" about meaningless shit long after I've ceased to care.
When I grow up, I wanna be Dennis Bailey! (Only younger and with more hair.)
