OH...another thing I suck at. Mental math. And counting a cash drawer by hand. Been doing it for a long time and I am STILL the 2nd-slowest person at my job to get a drawer counted.

Do you write down the amounts as you go? Count the 20s, write it down. Count the 10s, write it down. Etc...?
Yeah, I've tried writing it down. I STILL lose count when I do the coins half the time.
I wouldn't mind it so much if it weren't for the distractions, co-workers asking me questions in the middle of counting the change, boss yelling to hurry up so we can leave, people yelling through the gate to let them in...
When we had a change machine it was fun. When the change counter broke last month...I was pissed. STILL pissed. And I STILL can't count.

Sure. Why not? They're better if they're boiled in something besides plain old water - salted water, for example - but they are a perfectly acceptable thing to eat. You put a little butter, salt and pepper on them and how bad can they be? I wouldn't call them a taste sensation, but then again neither is rice.
You shouldn't use the same kind of potatoes as you use for baking, though - russet potatoes get too watery and mushy if you boil them, IMO. But a nice Yukon Gold or a red potato can be quite nice.
A very traditional favorite here in the Midwest consists of green beans and something ham-ish (hamhocks, usually) simmered together with the small red potatoes called "new potatoes." This isn't my favorite dish by any means - I mean, it's fine, but there are better ways to fix green beans and new potatoes, and I can find better ways to use hamhocks, too, for that matter - but it's pretty tasty.
This reminds me of something I'm bad at - two things, really. I am really not very good at mental math, but that doesn't bother me that much. What does bother me a lot is that although I am an excellent speller, I am good at it only on paper, so to speak. That is, if I need to write, say, auxiliary, I can spell it just fine. But if someone asks me, "Hey, Kate, how do you spell auxiliary?" I have to write it down in order to give him the correct spelling. This is one reason why I was only so-so at spelling bees in my youth. Nobody would let me take a pad of paper up there, for some reason or other.
^ A few years back i had this gawd awful intestinal bacterial infection. I was hospitalized and everything. Well, i had to be on a liquid diet for a while, and then it was upgraded to that BRAT diet. Anyway, after having clear liquids for like a week, a boiled potato was like filet mignon. I never enjoyed a boiled potato so much in my life! It was so good (a little salt and pepper, i couldn't even have butter on it), that i will now make them as a side dish every now and then. I enjoy them although the family thinks i'm being lazy not going the full route and mashing them.

Don't knock it. Boiled baby potatoes with skin on are very tasty.
Oh yeah, baby potatoes. I also discovered some kind of spice packet at the store that's used on potatoes. What I do is dice baby potatoes, coat them with olive oil, sprinkle and coat with the spice, and then bake them per the instructions in a baking pan. They complement dinner very well.

I'd call what Rudolph describes here "fried potatoes" - fancy-schmancy name, huh? - but I've also heard them called "American fries."

I call them "fried potatoes" as well. Though in restaurants they're usually called "Country Fries".
Fried potatoes to me are mashed first. Don't know if that's a standard UK term or just my mum's cooking
