I thought it slightly amusing that list mentions the episode Aquiel, but neglects to note that most characters in the episode were named for characters from David Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean.
Yeah, that sort of referencing of other directors' works / the director's own work / other universes / other genres is pretty much expected and has been since Spielberg, Lucas and that crowd first came along. Forget First Contact; many episodes of TNG were filled with little nods and winks to anime and manga, to M*A*S*H, to Star Wars, to Buckaroo Banzai, to Doctor Who and loads of other things. His film, his call.
True. Even Jonathan Frakes allowed STAR WARS Easter Eggs into FC back in 1996, and Spielberg slipped R2-D2 into CLOSE ENCOUNTERS more than thirty years ago.
See a partial list here.
It's just not new in Trek and wasn't unheard-of even during the late 1960s, when TOS was in its original run; to get upset about it now is kind of pointless and silly.
I swear that, in the scene where Spock is flying the Jellyfish through the Narada's docking bay, I could see the T'Plana Hath from First Contact on one of the docking struts.
Can't be sure, though. Guess I'm gonna have to see it again.![]()
Also, one of the other admirals - the one sitting to the left of Tyler Perry - is Admiral Komack from the original series. Not the same actor of course, but the same character.
The name of the admiral is Admiral James Komack, of Welcome Back, Kotter and The Courtship of Eddie's Father fame. But, he additionally wrote "A Piece of the Action" episode.
Just so happens, I have a picture of said TOS Admiral Komack:

Curious...anyone got a screenshot of Komack in the new movie? Does the new actor look anything like a slightly younger version of the original guy?
I did say that it was a partial list.

And what deal was that, pray tell? No one is exempt, I'll have you know. I thought we had an agreement that you were never ever never never ever ever going to refute me! So the deals off I see....Ok you know what that means...you're off the payroll!![]()
I've never seen one that was very good, and most of them are pretty awful. If you find a good one, take a copy and show it to Bonz. Can we get an icon that blows a kiss...I'd love that one and then my life is complete and I can die happy.

Best I could manage I'm afraid.
One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure - Writer/producer Alex Kurtzman revealed that his favorite "Trek" secret is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment from the scene where the Enterprise comes out of warp speed and into a battle above Vulcan. "When they arrive and all the debris is flying at the Enterprise, take a very close look at the debris," he explained, saying a cool Easter egg is in there. "You'll have to watch it on DVD, because it goes by very fast. But take a close look at what's floating in the debris."
I'm not sure, but maybe you missed the 'You'll have to watch it on DVD' part.Huh. I've watched the seen about six times now and I see nothing. One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure - Writer/producer Alex Kurtzman revealed that his favorite "Trek" secret is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment from the scene where the Enterprise comes out of warp speed and into a battle above Vulcan. Oh, then I must apologize. Sorry, superstring01. I did not take that possibility into consideration. But you must admit, it was rather unlikely that I was actually talking to someone who had the luck of getting the DVD.I have a DVD and it's a real copy and a legal one, just not the "for sale" variety. My boyfriend received an advanced copy about a week ago for "official purposes". I've watched the scene and unless it's going to be added later, I probably just need it pointed out to me.
