It is just odd, they seemed to want to de-emphasize the military aspects by hiding the ranks and "Starfleet doesn't shoot first" mantra. But, at the same time, give us Admiral GI Joe and a Starfleet military academy.

Like much of the first two episodes, they kinda seemed all over the place.

If you are truly a science and exploratory organization, shouldn't you have Admirals more like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory?

He tells the Organians: I'm a soldier, not a diplomat. Seems clear enough.

Since the diplloma has the Starfleet arrowhead on it, that makes it pretty damn clear this military academy is a Starfleet training facility.

Yes, but it could have easily existed before Andoria joined the federation and they kept the name.

I'm not arguing against Starfleet being a military, it is a military.

Michael mentioned knowing 'Suus Mahna', a Vulcan combat form first mentioned by T'Pol in Enterprise. It was also referenced in the ST'09 novel. (Credit - TrekCore)

Strall, Stamets' counterpart on the USS Glenn mentioned the 'Zee-Magnees Prize', which was a Prize Dr. Daystrom was mentioned winning in TOS. (Credit - TrekCore)

Michael mentioned that Amanda read her and Spock 'Alice in Wonderland' when growing up, starmike pointed out in the canon thread, that this might be a reference to TAS, where it was mentioned that Amanda was fond of Carroll's works.

I tried to overlay the two, the line up pretty close.

I mentioned it in the video. What I haven't heard mentioned is the Vulcan expeditions that Burnham talked about - one of these would have been something that Kirk would have participated in or may even be taking part in at the time of DSC...

I mentioned that either here earlier in the thread or in the episode review one, and someone jumped at me for saying it should be called "Vulcanian Expedition". But I'm pretty sure it's the same thing, and a callback to the Expedition Kirk was on.

No, I don't think Burnham's choice assignment and the mission Kirk and those folks at the bar in "Court Martial" could be the same. Burnham wanted to join an organization - the Vulcanian Expedition was a single sortie, a point in the timeline, now past.

Of course, the organization could have mounted the expedition. But even that doesn't seem likely, as Burnham didn't seem to like humans and did like Vulcans, and everybody we know from the Vulcanian Expedition was a human.

3 of them are clearly TOS Call backs, one looks like Starbase 11 (or a similar facility) one has a preserver obelisk and one looks like the Janus IV mining colony.

There are two others which is unclear what they are, a reddish planet, possibly Vulcan? And a planet with very ancient Greek looking architecture.

As for Lorca's trophy room at the end, I spotted a Gorn Skeleton (TOS gorn, you can tell from the shape of the jaws), a few Klingon trophies and what looks like a Cardassian Vole?

So according to After Trek, Lorca did not kill/enounter the Gorn, but bought/acquired it from someone.

Michael Burnham's Vulcan martial art, "suus mahna", was from ENT: "Marauders". It was also named in the ST'09 script (but didn't make it to air) and novelization.

Someone mentioned that the planet with the Greek-looking architecture was the one with the Guardian of Forever, which it may be, albeit an "ancient" view of that location. There is a bright blue glow coming from the right-side of the Parthenon-looking structure that could be the Guardian "turned on". Which brings up an interesting thought - the Guardian we saw was surrounded by classical ruins. Perhaps this new Spore Drive traverses time as well as space and they don't know it yet, leading to some unintended temporal causality consequences of its use. We may have seen the Guardian's planet as it existed millennia ago.

It struck me, though, when I watched the After Trek show and the exec producer (forgot his name) said something to the effect that everything they do in the show is for a reason. He mentioned this as it applied to Stamets brushing the sparkly spore stuff off his shoulder. True, the planet scenes, like the "neutered tribble" (which was also mentioned in After Trek) may have been fan-service callbacks to TOS things and nothing more, but there could actually be much more going on there.

The producers are obviously positing the 'Star trek' Universe becomes Frank Herbert's DUNE Universe and exposure to the Spore Dust will evolve Stamets into the first Third Stage Navigator (link)

I noticed her. It's hard to tell, she appears very briefly.

I would actually prefer if they mainly used known Federation species for this era, there is not supposed to be that many Federation members yet.

It is likely they would be members. We really have no solid numbers on how many, we know its over a 100 by TNG, so it could be as high as 70 or more.
