Earth and the Overlords?

Another random thought thread.

I'm just curious, what do you lot reckon would happen to Earth if one of the major races was to come across our planet, as it stands at it's current technology level (of course, that's assuming that these species were the type not to care about another's technology level)?

I can for example imagine that the Klingons would go about trying to conquer us, and either we'd put up such a long resistance that the planet would be ruined by the time they'd either suceeded (humanity wiped out or surrendered etc.), since it's unlikely that Earth would be left alone even if we managed to repulse the first assault or so.

Other races, for example the Dominion or the Romulans I'm not too sure about. With the Dominion, they attacked the Federation as it was a rival sovereign power, while Earth as it is now isn't a threat, so I could see the Dominion just coming over, saying that we're now part of their empire, but we're essentially free to do what we want, except for maybe resource tithes. This is a viewpoint derived from the fact that in 'The Search', it seemed that the Founders and the higher ups didn't regularly interfere with the activities of client races or the like, unless necessary or in terms of foreign policy.

Thoughts?

Earth in reality is a backwater, if a race able to achieve interstellar flight did happen upon us and were not interested in us just the minimal resources our planet has I have a feeling very few of us would have any idea what hit the planet as there wouldn't be much left.

A race that was interested in us and happened upon Earth might not want to try to talk to anyone as we are a very fractured planet.

Klingons: attampt conquest.
Romulans: likewise
Cardassians: likewise
Andorians: probably ally with us and tech-jump us to a higher level
Vulcans: well... prolly what they did in ENT
Tellarites: argue with us a lot.
Ferengi: sell us warp drive and weapons.
Orions: steal our women, the green bastards.
Tholians: attempt conquest

dunno about anyone else, probably ignore us.

For Klingons, you can tell what they'd do by looking at Errand of Mercy.

What other race has been known to conquer other planets not part of their own system? I wonder what stopped any of the villianous worlds from attacking Earth before Cochrane's warp drive test... were we ignored? Were we protected? What were the rules of engagement before the Federation?

It's easy to think that our Earth was under developed, and perhaps not worth the effort. But we must of had something to offer? And certainly the Klingons or the Romulans knew of us, and who couldn't use another notch in the Empire, just for shits and giggles?

I suspected Earth was considered part of the "Vulcan sphere of influence" and thus let alone not to bother the green-blooded hobgoblins.

Considering our proximity to Vulcan, I'd say it's more likely that the Andorians would either turn Earth into a strategic base or they'd make us a Vassal Race/weaker partner. They didn't seem overly cruel from what we saw in ENT.

Less than that, actually. The VULCANS were the only ones we saw turning anyone into subject worlds.

We've come for your sun and your asteroids.

Actually, depending on their ethics, they might not kill us. It's not like we could strongly interfere with them doing anything they wanted more than a few ten thousand kilometers above the Earth.

Realistically, there's no good reason for spacefaring people to jump back down into a gravity well, but in Trek terms, they could just surreptitiously eradicate us with custom-replicated plagues that would pose no threat to them. I'm surprised biowar isn't more heavily practiced in Trek. Worked great for the Federation, after all.

Whether the Klingons would try to conquer us or not probably depends on the leadership. If it's one of those rare periods were the leadership is as honourable as they claim, then we're probably safe.

From Enterprise we saw that Orions don't just take woman, they take men as well. So unless you're less than attractive then I'd bet you'd be sold out to slavery as well.

My choice for a race to visit us today would have to be Andorians or Ferengi as the rest of the space faring races would probably want to conquer or annihilate us and the Vulcans wouldn't give us any notice unless we achieve Warp drive.

^FERENGI? They'd own the planet in a day!
But I agree on the Andorians. The Tellarites might be good too, but unfortunatly Enterprise didn't show much of them.
