Early Criticism: What’s Unfounded and What Isn’t

It's a good thing, I mean it as a compliment, but I guess it also describes an on-screen look that's perhaps a bit eerily perfect - again I'd bet it's down to modern cameras, filters, and makeup artistry, which make already-attractive people look absolutely flawless, whereas older cameras seemed to always show skin imperfections, sweat, and dodgy makeup up much more sharply, and often in way harsher lighting.

All the actors look great IRL of course.
It’s because you’re watching HD scans of shows that were never intended to be projected at the full resolution of their 35mm camera negatives. Of course you’d be seeing a shitload of imperfections.

On the reunion documentary of Gilligan's Island, Russell Johnson (The Professor) said his interview for the show consisted of taking his shirt off.

That always amused me.
Well hey, how many women (secretly) had a crush on the Professor from Gilligan's Island? Just like most guys preferred Mary Ann over Ginger, to the surprise of many!!

I am. I love looking at pretty people as does my wife.

The cast of Starfleet Academy is also as attractive as any other, it just has a bigger focus on the male eye candy.
"Beautiful People" can also serve as a "hook" to reel in viewers...a great example of this was a woman named Dylan Dreyer, who was a meteorologist from WHDH in Boston.
She was blonde and beautiful and did the weather and suddenly WHDH saw a huge spike in viewership, especially during her segments...so what did other stations do? they went out and got supermodel weather women to compete...and now it's kind of the norm...

This falls into the realms of Social Psychology. 'Beautiful People' are still treated differently, often 'better' to use a term.
I work in healthcare and we have pharma and equipment reps who visit us to demonstrate products and medications...and I'd say that 90% of these people are very pretty (or handsome) people..this is by design.

An attractive actor won't make me automatically watch something just because of his presence, nor will it retain my viewership if I dislike the series or film. But if I'm already committed to watching something I'm not going to complain about having someone nice to look at as icing on the cake.

Robert Meyer Burnett is on one due to Jay-Den wearing a "skirt" in this weeks episode.

What do Foundation and Dune have to do with how a character dresses in a Star Trek Show? Isn't Jay-Den wearing the same Academy issued clothing as other cadets in the show? I have to say I didn't even notice he was wearing a skirt in the episode.

Seriously, the clothing judgement breaks my brain a little.

I'd love to see chuds like RMB try saying the amount of shit they spew directly to the actors faces. They never would, because they are fucking cowards hiding behind their keyboards and their echo chamber safe spaces.

Skirts offer superb ventilation for the groinal area, which Klingons would see the wisdom in. The outfit's colours are a bit of a unique choice though.

My opinion of the show is it's really good when it's good and really bad when it's bad and that's notable because I often feel this way about the show during single episodes. It goes from incredibly poignant to ridiculously silly in the span of a few scenes.

I'm enjoying the show so much that it is one of the three shows I look forward to watching (Fallout, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and Starfleet Academy are my week) but the hamster on crack editing and pacing of the show (I.e. like a cartoon) is something I feel could have been massively dialed back.

Part of this is the fact that I feel like they are stuffing the episodes due to the 10 episode runtime. This is a series that definitely could have gone for 26 episodes (DISCO also suffered from this while SNW managed its time better).

For example:

* I feel like the War College being a******* would have been better if they'd been badgering our characters for a few episodes before the big prank war. If they're going to be Cobra Kai or House Slytherin, you need to lay the groundwork.
* What is the set up for the War College and Starfleet Academy's rivalry? Is it like Police Academy where they plan to keep one and get rid of the other? It would be nice to understand that.
* I feel like they should have explained more about where Caleb got all of his skills. He's far from a Gary Stu but unless he learned his computer hacking skills from a monk in Monte Cristo, I'd like to know where he picked them up. "The Streets" doesn't make you a polymath.
* Introducing SAM's brain working like Harley Quinns/Ms. Marvel's isn't something I hold against her but it was just dumped on us and I would have appreciated having that explained better with some smaller bits showing it's a cartoon.
* Why is Kelrec such a sad, sad lonely man? Why do the rest of the faculty treat him like he's Barclay? I don't think we're meant to feel sorry for the poor guy and think Ms. Frizzle, err Chancellor Ake, is bullying him.

Too much Rick & Morty like?

Too much Rick & Morty like?

100%

I think it's generally agreed Lower Decks started the same way and when they ditched the Rick and Morty darkness/nihilism for cozy science fiction, it became the beloved Trek series it did.

Basically:

* Mariner stabbing Boimler while drunk = bad
* Mariner and Boimler hanging out on the holodeck = good
* Mariner refusing to believe Boimler could pull a hottie = bad
* Mariner insecure about losing her friend to promotion = good

And so on.
