Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

There's video games at CC? I also thought it's basically movies/shows, merchandise and comics. There's a section for video games now too?
Some, not quite the level of the movies or shows, but they are doing a big Hall H, or whichever one they do all the big movie and TV panels in, panel for the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 game coming out later this year.

Because like it or not San Diego Comic Con is too big and needs big names to attract crowds. Unless it's George RR Martin reading excerpts from the finished next GoT book that is about to be released and answering questions people will not line up and fill the big halls for a panel for a SF/Fantasy novel writer.

The movie/TV Show entertainment industry has far eclipsed literature in terms of size and interest and big events like these can't remain this big without attracting big (and paying) crowds.
What does it matter if I like it? I've never been to San Diego, nor a Comic-Con and likely never will.

You can praise movies and TV shows until every cow in the galaxy comes home, but none of that would have started without the literary forms starting everything off nearly a century ago.

I just looked up Worldcon, and it's been going every year since 1939, with the exception of the WWII years. If the literary end were as dead as you suggest, Worldcon would have folded a long time ago.

You do realize that there's more than one GoH, right? And they do more than just read from one of their own books?

The movie side of Comic Con has been dying anyway. Lots of studios pulled out prior to the strike. Rather do their own events

Some in the past backed out completely. When a movie trailer debuted there and the reception was horrible that would spread bad word all the way to the box office.

I commented because you stated that you are "bemused" and can't relate to the entire situation, i just pointed out that SD Comic Con is so large it can't survive anymore without Hollywood and that habits and preferences have changed over the last decade, i.e. away from reading towards movies and TV and the focus of events like these have changed. SD Comic Con obviously started out as a comic convention but for the last 1-2 decades the focus shifted to movies and shows.

You seem to always have an axe to grind when its books vs. newer media and that's ok - you prefer books, others don't. However what i find bemusing ( to use your words) is that you seem to feel the need to put everything down that is not in a book and i find that very intolerant of you. No one is taking away your books so leave the other side be where there is currently a huge struggle underway over the future direction of the entire industry ( which doesn't affect you since you prefer books).

 That sounds like it could be translated as "Shut up, Timewalker."

I praise what I like and speak negatively about what I don't like. Just because I can't relate to something doesn't necessarily mean I think it's bad. It just means I can't relate to it, and in this case I think it's a bit sad that people don't seem able to have a good time with printed literature anymore.

The conventions I went to did include TV and movie stuff, btw. There was a video/movie room that ran movies at least 20 hours/day (we had to leave time for the hotel staff to tidy up a bit each day). One year my roommates and I hosted an open-room Doctor Who video event. We ran Classic Who episodes about 12-14 hours each day. Mind you, at that time all we had was Tom Baker and a little Davison (this was after The Five Doctors had aired), but people still enjoyed it.

A lot of Star Trek stuff happened, and some of the GsoH were Star Trek tie-in authors. Two of my fondest memories of these conventions were meeting Alan Dean Foster one year and Bjo Trimble and Sonni Cooper another year. I had a chance to chat with Peter David, and got him to sign an extra copy of one of his books as it was intended as a prize for our local ST club's Star Trek Jeopardy! contest I ran at our annual summer barbecue.

So I'm not against TV/movies. I'm currently enjoying every moment of my newfound Merlin fandom. It's just that I like the written stuff more, and derive much more enjoyment from meeting authors than actors. Most of my SF collection consists of books, rather than DVDs, models, action figures, etc. Though I did see something on Pinterest that has me wishing I could find the Merlin LEGO minifigs. Those are cute.

I've noticed that some people in this thread seem to think they have me all figured out, that I'm a book purist and nothing else will do. Well, in some cases, that's true enough. But I don't mind adaptations that treat the source material with respect. After all, my current NaNoWriMo project is doing a prose adaptation of a computer game, and I had to change some things to make the story flow better. That said, I'm working with the source material, not against it. No genderswaps happen, for instance.

Oh, and books vs. movies doesn't mean the books win all the time. I prefer the Harry Potter movies to the novels, except when the movies left stuff out that should have been in there.

I think respect of works gets taken too far in criticism of adaptations. I don't agree with all changes in this recent Dune adaptation, just like I didn't like some facets of the miniseries adaptation. What I find enjoyable about them outweighs the bad, as my dad finally enjoyed Dune. My wife gets the chance to enjoy it. I think there is greater accessibility for those in my life to appreciate what I have for years, while I get to sit back and enjoy the ride.

My two solarii.

Not super surprising when they also have Wonka and this strike is going for the long haul. Give Dune a summer tentpole, keep Wonka Christmas. If Legendary and Villeneuve agree.

I'd rather it came out in November (or, like, today) but I can see the reasoning.

It's starting to look like covid times.

WB is contemplating moving the release of Part 2 to next year.

Damnit! :scream:

But, yeah, this isn't surprising news. Just frustrating and disappointing.

Studios rather fuck everyone around instead of paying decent wages and not replace artists with AI.

Like I said in the Marvel thread, these assholes are craven.

I keep meaning to watch the 2021 Dune, more then the few clips I've seen in passing. It looks like I'll have even more time to eventually hate watch it before the sequel comes out  Honestly, I've been half hoping that WB would throw it away as a tax write off so I could skip it. Now my excuse is that I'm waiting for both parts to be out and on streaming, at which point I'll watch the complete story (well, the complete story of Villeneuve's loose adaptation of the first Dune book). I'm still betting that Villeneuve uses the Lynch ending with it raining on Arrakis at the end of part 2, he certainly seems to like the Lynch movie a lot more then the book from what I've seen.
