Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

I recall someone suggesting using the basic plot of GEoD as a framing story around CoD, that might come across better than just being a prologue for HoD.

I also think, assuming the franchise is successful enough to make it this far, we will unfortunately see adaptations of some of the BH/KJA stuff, namely the Butlerian Jihad and (sigh) their "finale" to the main sequence. They're already involved with the productions going on now, anyway.

I think the suggestion I made some years back was to just not adapt GEoD directly at all, and instead thread it all through the sequel adaptations to serve as a sort of connective tissue, because the actual plot of GEoD is pretty meaningless and not really worth bothering with.

With God Emperor i only see it filmable if you reduce its philosophical and internal elements to the actual barebones story that happens, i.e. Leto II. did what Paul couldn't and sacrificed his humanity for the sake of humanity as a whole because they knew mankind eventually could fall for a number of reasons.

Throughout the movie it can be revealed how Leto intentionally put mankind essentially on lockdown and willingly played the tyrant so people could focus their anger somewhere until the time was ready to step away and let the Scattering happen. Now all this would make for a quite dry movie, especially for a SF movie so i think it would be necessary to add some action elements through the Fish Speakers and others ( maybe fighting the strengthening resistance to his rule) to make it more interesting to the general audience.

However i don't see more than one movie for this and not a very long one even though what happens there is crucial to the overal story.

What the hell was Sean Young thinking?

I agree with you here. God Emperor was such a slog for me to get through. I read it off and on for fifteen years, determined to get over the hump. Now I'm stuck on Heretics of Dune.

When it comes to God Emperor if they made a film of that they've got to make Siona Atreides or someone else more of a challenge. What the first three Dune novels got was the heroes were in legit danger, whereas in God Emperor Leto II was basically untouchable. I do to think any God Emperor film should do more with the Fish Speakers, a neat concept that the novel itself didn't do much with.

I just googled the fish speakers and got this
"The Fish Speakers typically wore skintight one-piece uniforms..... and high boots"
I bet Rick Berman would love to get involved in this adaptation

It's work and that's hard to find for ageing female actors of, let's be generous, middling ability. I wonder how many people will be fooled into thinking this movie is in any way related to either the current one or the 1984 one. Heck, you never know, it might by some measure be good but I don't feel inclined to invest my time to find out.

My brain couldn't help but shout "hi Mark" when the worm popped up.
Happens every time I watch a z list movie

Katherine Newton as Irulan.
I don't know your Irulan choice but pretty close to my Kiernan Shipka choice lookswise. I never saw that character as much more than a pretty but characterless statue so looks are most important here
While I was rereading the book this time around, Jodie Comer popped into my head.
Honestly, I don't get the impression Irulan is going to be a very large role in the movie, especially since the role of Narrator has already been reassigned to Chani. And really, within the narrative of the book, Irulan's role is practically non-existent, if it weren't for each chapter starting off with a quote from her, it's likely no one would even have remembered the character. That being the case, I highly doubt any big name actress is going to be cast as Irulan.

That's a fair point. I guess I'm thinking in terms of the possibility of Messiah and beyond (is she in more after that?) and they wanted to cast someone big in preparation for that. Much like Jason Momoa (although Duncan did get a bigger role).

I was thinking more of the ongoing franchise. Villeneuve has plans for Messiah too as his Dune trilogy, and no doubt if the films are profitable there will be more movies and streaming projects. Messiah and CoD both have bigger roles and who knows what shows might get made:shrug:

If it was just for Dune then they might as well get some cheap, pretty blonde model with no acting experience since Irulan is basically set dressing in the first book.

She has a bigger role in both Messiah and CoD.

Yeah, in fact both Irulan and Wensica are required to continue the franchise. I can't see combining those two will work - Irulan is crucial to Dune Messiah and Wensica and her son Farad'n are crucial to Children of Dune.

I've often wondered what percentage of their profits come from confused parents or grand parents who can't tell the difference between their movies and the ones they're ripping off.

Sean Young was blackballed well before she became an "actress of a certain age". She's tried to spin it lately into Hollywood being afraid of a strong woman but there are some pretty crazy stories about the shit she was doing that led to it.

seem to recall stories that she could be difficult to work with. Also remember reading she tore a strip of her agent as she almost missed out on the role in Lynch’s film.

For some reason the Amazon scenes from Justice League came to mind. If their wasn't a breach between Snyder and WB, we could've gotten Zack Snyder's God Emperor of Dune.

It needs more action to capture the audience so Ide go with Michael Bays God Emperor of Dune
Yeah, I remember her strange Catwoman performance on a talk show back in the day.

I think it was bad form for Rivers to indulge that. Young's are not the actions of a sound mind
