Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

Off the top of my head, other animated characters with similar likeness to their voice actors include Bo-Katan on Star Wars Clone Wars and Rebels whose appearance is based on Katee Sackhoff (though with red hair as opposed to Sackhoff's blond) and the Watcher in Marvel's What If is based on Jeffrey Wright though without hair or a beard.

Disney animators often put characteristics of the voice actors into the characters, like Baloo in Jungle Book and when they used film of Robin Williams in the booth for some of Genie's movements and expressions in Aladdin.

Indeed. I’ve always heard that Robin Williams (RIP and then some, sorely missed!) drove the animators nuts because they could never figure out what impersonations he was going to do from take to take… and his basic reply was, ‘I’m the Genie. I can be whoever I want to be!’

Cheers,

Woody from Toy Story reminds me of a young Tom Hanks. Lord Farquaad from Shrek is definitely modelled on John Lithgow - to my mind, at least.

For anyone who's been wanting to rewatch Part 1 or hasn't seen it yet, they added it to Hulu back a couple weeks ago. It's already been on (HBO) Max since the home video release.

Yeah, I noticed it was on Hulu a few days ago. I was pleasantly surprised by its arrival (no pun intended).

It arrived on Netflix in Canada last month too. Also still on Crave. (Wrong dune) Getting the views in before part 2 opens.

I have Part 1 on Blu-ray. Haven't actually watched it very often, though I definitely plan on getting one more rewatch in before Part 2 comes out.

Part 1 is on HBOMax in the Netherlands. Seen the whole movie twice now. Attempted it twice, but often I can only start watching movies at a later time and start falling asleep. But I plan on rewatching it twice before Part 2. Get as many details in as possible.

I got really excited, they announced a Villeneuve for Montreal Comic Con - but it was Martin, Denis's brother.

I'm away during comic con anyway so probably better this way I don't regret missing it

So I finally checked out the blu-ray.

I have to say the volume on this thing seems low. I had to turn it almost all the way up to the max. ( Then again, my hearing is not great these days and it was competing with an air conditioner. )

Got about an hour through the film. It's a long film and lends itself to natural breaks which is fine by me. One thing that stood out to me was just how exquisite the set designed look. Much of Caladan was probably seen only briefly yet there was so many little details in it throughout that I couldn't help but be impressed.

The bull's head decoration was barely show, barely referenced but still made the detail work. Surprising.

Even at 155 minutes, it's at least an hour too short - much of value that Villeneuve filmed was left out. I know he doesn't do director's cuts, but perhaps he would be amenable to creating an extended edition in the matter of Peter Jackson.

Unlikely considering Villeneueve is the type of director who takes a strict view on editing and once a scene is removed, that's the final cut.

Well, we've seen what happens when directors won't leave their creations well enough alone (***cough***George Lucas***cough***) so he might have a point. However, we know Villeneuve shot several other scenes (such as the concealed conservatory and the banquet - possibly also Thufir Hawat being suspicious of Jessica) that I consider important to the story and would provide an explanation as to why Jessica seems to keep changing her outfit every five minutes for no good reason. But, it's his choice.

Damn, I didn't know they filmed those scenes. A shame he chose to not include them but I get why he didn't.

Maybe we will one day get an ultimate collection edition or something like it with the cut scenes, even if unfinished, included as extras. I'm very fine with the movie as is but i would still like to see more.

It speaks well of the film that people want more.

Though one thing that stands out to me is that the Sardaukar use their own livery rather than Harkonnen. I get that it's quick visual shorthand, but still gave me a brief head tilt moment.
