Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Am I the only one that's actually glad Jodorowski never got to do his version of Dune? It seems to be held in high regard by some significant quarters of the fandom (for lack of a better term) which just feels bizarre to me.

Don't get me wrong, the documentary of the doomed pre-production of that movie is a good one, but the project itself had it gone ahead would clearly have been a bunch of half-baked, self indulgent nonsensical psychedelic crap with little if any substantive relationship to the novel. It reeks of the kind of adaptation that has always irked me; the kind where the director and/or screenwriter actually have their own entirely different story to tell, but rather than just doing that, they attempt to haphazardly graft it into someone else's material, because the established name recognition is an easier sell.
It's hack writing trying to hide behind the figleaf or artistic interpretation.

For all it's many MANY flaws at least the Lynch version had a grasp of the general plot and a few of the primary themes of the novel.

I just think it's impossible to tell, and honestly the fandom's esteem for Jodorowsky's Dune is as valid as your own condemnation given nobody ever actually saw it. You're coming down pretty heavily on it. I do think a lot of that esteem just comes from the fact that lots of people don't know about Jodorowsky's Dune, so it provides some instant fan credibility.

Wouldn't really say I'm glad or not glad it never got made, but then I don't care about adaptations that much and almost certainly won't see this one.

IMO Jodorowski's Dune would have been horrendous, as would have been Ridley Scott's. Then again, the Dune we did get was pretty horrible (again, IMO).

As it is remains a crazy what if that definitely impacted film to come.

So Cineplex is planning on re-opening across Canada for Tenet, which Dune will likely be attached too. Anyone ready to actually return to a movie theatre? I'm going to be passing. I waited a month after the gym re-opened to make sure it wasn't spreading Covid, I will be doing the same with movie theatres.

Honestly? Kinda. I mean, I wouldn't call it a priority, but it sure would be nice to get back to the theatres and see some new movies. It feels so weird, the last time I was to a theatre was February. I think that's the longest stretch I've gone without going to the theatre in nearly a decade, if not longer.

Same here and that includes the near four years I was stationed aboard a Navy ship.

I miss the hell out of going to the cinema and I really do want to see The New Mutants and Tenet on the big screen. But the way things are now, it's just not safe. And that SUCKS.

From what i know about J's Dune it was probably good that it was never made - choosing "actors" based on just their image as celebrieties is completely the wrong way to go about when making a movie.

I'll probably not attend any bigger social gatherings like movie theaters because i just don't believe their capacity to really ensure and enforce hygiene properly and the stupidity of people knows no bounds. Most likely i'll wait until there is a vaccine, i have received it and the whole situation is truly relaxing.

I was debating going, but then I read an interview with a pair of epidemiologists, and they both said that we should absolutely not be going to movie theaters right now, so that made up my mind as a solid no.

Just reading about the trailer has me hyped beyond what's actually realistic and good

But it's just my luck that i will be gone come September 9th when the trailer hits online without Internet access and will only be able to see it a few days later :(

You're assuming it won't be pushed back again. I'm fully expecting the movie to come out in 2024 and the trailer in 2026.

Stills are leaking everywhere confirming it. Including the gom jabber at Paul's throat the writer did a Reddit AMA

I saw the pictures and.....

I wonder how different he online trailer will be.
