Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Did Gurney have a pug in the novels? Or were there any dogs/pets? (It's a while since re-read so can't recall)

:D. Lots of chairs. And people sitting in chairs, conversing. With the occasional lightning/imperceptible movement to show what a badass they were when not just sitting in chairs

Pretty sure the chairdogs didn't show up until the later novels, though like the nullentropy bins, I'm not sure if they were said to have been developed in the intervening time or had retroactively been around forever but just not mentioned in previous books. If it's the latter case I suppose it'd make sense if they were a Tleilaxu product that wasn't all that popular in the Imperium.
Either way I always found the concept...unsettling.

But no, there was no pug in the book, or pets of any kind. And no rats duct-taped hairless cats either. That was just Lynch being all "David Lynch" about it. That said, I'm kinda shocked he passed up the opportunity to do something creepy with the distrans bats.

I was watching a fan edit the other day and the damn dog is still there at the end!!

Would have thought water was too precious on Arrakis to waste on that dog.

Well, since water is the unofficial currency on Arrakis being able to waste it on nonessentials is a mark of wealth.

Remember how shocked Jessica was when she discovered the greenhouse/arboretum in their new palace on Arrakis or how the Harkonnen had a demeaning practice of allowing the towels they used to dry their hands with to be sold on the market for their water content. Or how the Atreides were initially insulted when Stilgar spat in front of the feet of Duke Leto until they remembered the value of water on Arrakis and that it was a gesture of respect.

I honestly have no idea why that dog was in the scene at all but it's also been ages since i watched the movie in its entirety but i can't recall Gurney having a dog. Would have been more fitting for him to carry his baliset on his back into battle.

If i recall correctly Null technology was developed during the God Emperor's reign - in fact i believe he wanted it developed so people were able to hide from other beings with prescience like himself or Paul thus ensuring no one would be able to wipe out humanity completely.
Chairdogs are also a later addition as you say and i share the sentiment.. at least unsettling if not outright disgusting.

It was the Duke's dog, Gurney was just watching over him. You see it at Duke Leto's side when he's composing his letter to Baron Harkonnen, and later when Duke Leto carries it into the ship to Arrakis (Paul's holding it during the actual transit) and upon arrival. A nice subtle bit of character humanizing.

There were a bunch of dogs on the Emperor's throne room in the opening scene as well. It's a rich aristocracy thing.

Not that I recall. Even in the movie, I got the impression the dog was supposed to be the Attreides family pet, which Gurney becomes super protective of during the fight for some damn reason.

I thought you were joking until I looked on the Dune Wiki and saw that it really is a thing. That is just..... disturbing. I didn't realize the books got that weird.

You'd think, but there's that bit in HoD (I think) where Teg & Duncan find an old Harkonnen bunker or some-such on what used to be Giedi Prime, complete with nullentropy bins. Somehow I doubt the Harkonnens lasted that long so it seems to imply the tech was pre-Jihad.

I tend to picture it as looking like a buckskin beanbag that acts kinda like memory foam...that moves on it's own...

Oh and that's FAR from the weirdest thing in the books. Pretty much anything to do with the Bene Tleilax is unsettling by design.

In GEOD Leto confirms that House Harkonnen wasn't annihilated by the Atreides and continued well into his reign in a throwaway line. Distant cousins running it and popping up their heads every once in awhile.

You'd have thought Paul would have had to have had the house disbanded on general principle. I mean can kanly be undeclared ?

I mean, he was the closest living relative, he should have inherited House Harkonnen himself:shrug:. But I guess he didn't want it. Maybe better to keep them around as scapegoats/practice targets?

I just looked it up. :wtf:

I just imagine Herbert was taking LSD daily at that point.

Kind of a sad commentary on sci-fi film right now (after a mini-golden age 2013-2015)..Dune is the only true mainstream sci-fi film of any note, and the only genre film of 2020 I have any interest in...no, I'm not counting superhero films, which are becoming tiresome.

RAMA

It's not space sci-fi, but there is also Tenet, which appears involve some kind of time manipulation.

Herbert Partnership is saying there will be big news soon. Which, is totally non-news and obviously new stuff will be coming soon but, meh, it's a Friday afternoon and why not mention it here.

So, what do we think? A trailer, or a postponement announcement?

I'd say either a teaser or another magazine spread, which will be two pages long with 3-4 new photos which will be released days before the magazine comes out. Like the last two times.
