Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

I know they get a lot of shit, but I like Pops as they tend to get licenses no one else does, along with the licenses everyone gets. I've quite a few of them about. Only get them when they are on clearance/sale, although I'd make an exception for Dune characters.

They are the most annoying thing to me. But, I'm also not a collector in that sense, so maybe I'm not the target audience.

Ditto. But not being the target audience is perhaps a good thing: I'd much rather see a new generation get into Dune, and anything that can help that is a step along the way...

I know I've mentioned this before somewhere, but if I were in charge of adapting the later novels, the road I'd take would be to go straight from CoD to HoD. Not skipping GEoD altogether exactly, but fold the important parts of it back into the narrative of Hod & CHoD as backstory. That can be done though simple world-building exposition or more directly though Other Memory flashbacks. Several Duncans were there for the whole thing after all, as was Siona who would become the ancestor of most, if not all of the Bene Gesserit by that point.
There's even several narrative links that could support this already present withing the text: both the archaeologist prologue and the hidden prescient message left by Leto at the ruins of Sietch Tabr.

I have had this thought as well, that Heretics is a great, intriguing jumping on point that is fairly relatable, yet takes everything we know about Dune and flipping it on it's ear. I like GEoD, but everyone complains about it's relatability and adaptability...but how much more effective it would work as something unseen, unknowable; the stuff of legends (which is what it all became for the Dune universe after a thousand years). There was an early moment in Heretics that alludes to Duncan wanting to escape school and wander among the everyday population, and it created an image in my head of a street performance play that depicts a major part of GE's narrative (the fall from the bridge, Hwi's goodbye to the GE, something like that). The archaeology angle you mention can reveal other aspects of the story. It's a win-win by avoiding telling a story that many feel won't work, while at the same time building up it's mystic and making it something that people want to learn more about.

I love Pops! and finally started a collection around the time The Force Awakens came out. I would love to get some Dune pops.

Anyone seen anything with this Timothee Chalamet? I haven't.

I'm honestly surprised at how this is progressing. Production planned for 2019, Paul being cast. I'm still not convinced this will actually get made but it's already gone further than I had anticipated.

Chalamet was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Call Me By Your Name. He's also recently starred in Lady Bird, another critically acclaimed film.

Yeah, his IMDB page is there for anyone to see. The question was has anybody here seen anything he was in?

I guess I didn't do a very good job of suggesting that I've seen him in those movies; they're not exactly obscure. But yes, he's an excellent young actor.

Wow, could this actually get made? Right now Villeneuve is one of the few directors I would trust to actually pull this off.

The general (non-Dune) public would be lost in any movies made from books after The Children of Dune...stories within stories...feints within feints. Erasmus and Omnius would be interesting characters in a movie. A Machine Crusade era movie would be cool and fit right in with the near future of A.I.s. Although I agree Dune - Dune Messiah are my all time favorites.

I was 95% sure it wouldn't. Now I'm about 65%. Lots of movies still get stuck in development hell at this point.

Hiring an actor to look like the guy from the atrocious Lynch movie is not what I'd call a beneficial choice. They should do everything possible to not reference that movie at all.

Then again, I consider the two mini-series as being perfect adaptations so I think doing another Dune adaptation is pointless anyway, so

Oh, look - they're both young, movie-handsome men with dark hair! How can we tell them apart?!

The miniseries is great but you can tell they didn't have the budget towards the end. There are terrible desert matte paintings everywhere.

Do you mean the original miniseries? They aren't matte paintings in traditional sense, but translights (illuminated backgrounds in a studio environment) which were a specific choice of the series' award-winning cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro. You can see them here:

Interesting experiment, if not entirely successful. I think CoD abandoned this in favour of more use of CGI
