I think the discovery bolts are better then the Kelvin timeline ones. They shoot faster, and seem way more accurate.

The ones in the Kelvin movies just seem to fire wildly at the target.

Also, don’t forget, Wrath of Khan had bolts of some sort as well. Or at the very least just very fast firing beams.

The Defiant's gatling/pulse phasers were a slightly different take on the bolt style.

Pulse phaser cannons on the Defiant, similar and probably a much more updated version of the plasma pulse cannons the NX class initially used.

The Miranda class (in torpedo bar configuration) is often said to be equipped with two pulse phasers, almost like the Defiant - they are what we see being fired in Wrath of Khan when the Enterprise receives that broadside to it's unshielded engineering hull, and then later again during the Battle of the Mutara Nebula:

The Enterprise seems to respond with a beam, but one that is fired almost like a pulse at times. Wrath of Khan is an exception, as the original post said. It seems phaser emitters can fire either way as seen in TOS when the beam is set to 'dispersal fire'.

Although, it seems to depend on the shot, close up they look much shorter

I do like this shade of blue

One thing I noticed, is that the ships never seem to fire more then one bolt at a time from a single hard point, they only seem to fire again once the last shot hits the target.

Watch this in slow motion (there is a playback speed option on youtube) and watch how they fire.

The TWOK phasers were damn near perfect in my opinion.

They were long and thin and dangerous looking. The sound effect was very non-traditional and made them sound like pure sizzling energy. They basically combined the best elements of a pulse weapon and a pure beam weapon.

Aside from the TOS phasers, I never really liked any of the other depictions. The TNG era phaser beams were all too fat and animated looking. The JJ Phasers are too pew-pew. The Disco Phasers are barely noticeable.

TWoK-styled phaser blasts are best, though I do love the phasers used for the Enterprise-D. That whole wrap-around, sling-shotty thing -- what's it all about? Haven't a clue, not a friggin' clue ... but I love it!

With luck they will also bring back the idea of using the same stock footage image of the ship shooting it's weapons in ever episode.
