DS9's growing popularity

I just came back from the Toronto Fan Expo, and as very unscientific as this is, Kate Mulgrew had a line that never ended (until she left early!!), Levar Burton had a modest line-up throughout the day, and Nana Visitor (who was ADORABLE to talk to!!!) was mostly empty.

I wouldn't put their characters on equal footing in popularity, but still, as a simple anecdote, I think it's a bit telling on the levels of popularity. I'm not lying when I say I felt a little bad for her, Nana was easily one of the friendliest people there!

Wow, I would gladly hang out with Nana at her empty booth! Love her! And LOVE Kira!

If DS9 is getting more popular, it could be thanks to its format. Long-term serial storytelling on television has really blown up since DS9 was on the air. These days it's getting hard to find an old-school episodic drama on TV that isn't a procedural of some kind. That just wasn't the case in the 90s.

Having multiple seasons of heavily arced content available all at once on Netflix or DVD helps, too. It feeds into that "just one more episode" mentality that the other Trek series (mostly) just don't have.

I wonder if Babylon 5's stock has been rising, too...
