DS9 = WORST Star Trek Series EVER

Trek fans are actually very similar to Romulans, "a passionate people, easily moved to extreme emotions."

I like all series, although I refuse to take Enterprise as canon. Actually, Enterprise could be a prequel to JJ's reboot. But I know I have my favorite and least-liked ones. Still, I'm a Trekkie and proud of being one. So say we all!

Right?

Right that Enterprise is not canon? No.

Your choice. :)

Actually it referred to the "So say we all" part, which itself referred to "I'm a Trekkie and proud of being one."

I think DS9 did a great job in moving away from the comfort zone and started exploring alien cultures more and succeeded and with good writing and drama I think it is one of the best series. Having the setting on a space station isn't a disadvantage at all. So they went ahead and explore the lives aliens in more details.

Perhaps that is part of the following shows struggled somewhat. DSN I believe was one of the more crtically acclaimed of the ST shows. So we had TNG which recieved critcial praise, folowed by DSN which received critical praise. So following shows are held to the standard of the shows that precede them. With TNG and DSN being in good critical regard, VOY and ENT had big shoes to follow.

DS9 was very much a Soap Opera for Trekkies. I don't mean that negatively, only that it was an acquired taste, only picked up after repeated viewings.

Most Star Trek is pretty accessible. Even if you'd never watched the show, it was pretty clear what was going on in most episodes. DS9, on the other hand, preferred long conversations about galactic politics or bajorian religion, or banal personal conversations at Quarks Bar. Mostly stuff which made no sense to non-regular viewers.

I think Trek fans are a little elitist about DS9. They recognize it's the only serious Star Trek which was explicitly made for Trekkies, and there's a "you don't get it" attitude towards its critics. They tend to overlook the problematic aspects of the show (which were ultimately pretty similar to those of VOY and ENT).

IMO, the DS9 writers did a lot of interesting things and eventually ended-up with a great show. But from a broader perpective it was "Too Much Star Trek" and crowded out the other programming and watered-down the brand.

very well said. deserves to be quoted. i didn't get into ds9 until i forced myself to watch quite a few episodes. once the characters grew on me, i got quite into the show

The crummy first two seasons of DS9 did not help matters, it would be rather off-putting for new viewers/comers of DS9. DS9 is sort of like the ultimate in defered gratification (you endure the mainly so-so season 1, the almost directionless season 2, warm up to the transitional season 3, and whoop with joy when season 4 comes along and the rest of the seasons suck you in).

With TNG and VOY you could just sort of dive in at any point and understand what was going on because they were simpler series...

"Crummy"? "Directionless"???

Episodes like "Duet, "Necessary Evil" and "The Wire" are almost universally acclaimed. And then there are a whole raft of season 1-2 episodes which are arguably well-loved and regarded. Some of my faves:
"Emissary", "Dax", "The Nagus", "In The Hands of the Prophets" (a GREAT episode), "The Circle" Trilogy, "Whispers" and more.

There seems to be a raft of DS9 fans that seem obsessed by the Dominion war and the show only "got good" when it got obsessed with the war and every other episode was about how bleak things were.

I guess I'm in the minority then: Although season 4 is my favourite, I actually prefer (as a whole) the earlier seasons than the latter. I thought the show got too smug, war-driven and dull in seasons 6-7. Sure, there were some good episodes, but the overall tone I felt suffered.

I also have to pick you up on calling TNG "simpler" (I can't speak for Voyager as I haven't watched enough of it). If by simpler you mean "episodic", then yes, it was. AND THAT'S NOT A BAD THING. Simpler in terms of storylines? I'd disagree, but it varies (across both DS9 and TNG).

What's with some DS9 fans these days having a real arrogant streak about them?? It's probably a reaction to how we (DS9 fans) felt in the 1990s, when everyone was hating on the show. Now it's trendy and kewl to like it, suddenly all the other Treks are **** in comparison.

Yea, I can understand some might not find S1 and S2 as exciting, as the later seasons, but, I personally enjoyed all 7 seasons. I really enjoyed the Politics and Religious nature of many of the stories in S1 and S2, and getting all the backstory of Bajor. I kinda missed that when the focus shifted, but, I do definitely love where the Series went in the later seasons. It was 7 Seasons long, and had to evolve, or it would've gotten stale, and the overall arc waas so deep and layered, it couldn't possibly have all been there from the beginning.

wow Deep Space is my favorite of all the STAR TREK's I grew up and started watching it during the second season, and watched the third during its first run on WNUV TV 54 Baltimore! It was the "new" star trek. TNG was the "old" one that was on reruns on FoX 45 WBFF Baltimore every night. I had caught the finalle of TNG during its first run. All this being said, Deep Space Nine captivated me in a way that next gen did not. It locale were truely exoctic. I recognized it as the one where they wore the black suits, with the purple undershirts, and had a rectangle behing the emblem instead of the circle on the communicator badge. So being that it was my favorite as a kid also helped me enjoy it more as an adult. But the reason I enjoy it more now is that it is more realistic, in that the characters are 3 dimensional not perfect people, and the in world of Deep Space there is more of connection of the episodes, like in TNG if u had never seen another episode before watching one from anywhere was no problem for me to figure out what was going on. Ds9 the choices made resulted in consequences just like in real life. That being said the writing from seasons 3-6 was SO DAMN good!!! DEEP SPACE is my favortite, its different from all the rest for sure, but thats prolly why I love it so much!!!

DEEP SPACE NINE truly is top of the pops!

I thought the first seasons of ENT and TNG were dull the first time I watched them (well, I thought TNG was flat out embarrassing) but I think the only time I didn't enjoy DS9 was Profit and Lace. Even Fascination which was such a dumb and hokey plot contrivance had Lwaxana in it whom I adore. I never found the first season or two dull at all. But then I loved the space station and I think I just thoroughly enjoyed watching a show take place on it.

I disagree the braod consesus amogest a large portion of fans and some TV critics is that it was the best of the shows and or at the very least almost as critically acclaimed as TNG wzas. How does that water down the brand? Isn't it more a case of VOY and ENT being the weak ling that watered down the brand?(by some at least)

I would say that vOY was servicble but no where near TNG and DSN at their respective peaks.

All 4 of the Series watered down the Brand by ever dwindling ratings and Box Office profit.

DS9 is definitely my favorite of the Series, but, unfortunately ratings trend showed it wasn't so with the General Audience (Additionally, Enterprise S4 was also awesome, and, IMHO, was what the show should've been like from the beginning, but, it was the Series that got cancelled before it got to it's 7 years)

Enterprise was a good show, one intelligently written (for the most part) and with an effective cast. I would have liked to have seen a fifth season, but I suppose for many Trek was at the burn-out stage at that time.

As for DS9, I say again, and in agreement with those others who have said so, it was the best of the five series, hands down.
