DS9 - Where are the Vulcans?

I'm watching DS9 for the first time, straight through, with a handful of episodes left in season six. Something that has left me scratching my head is the lack of any kind of Vulcan presence. I suppose the Federation could have a unified fleet, but I don't recall seeing any Vulcans in anything other than the most minor of roles. Is there a canon reason to explain this?

Well, not so much a main character; I've seen a few in non-speaking roles and it just seems odd for them to not be a factor given the storyline.

You had the Vulcan Admiral in season six who spoke. Plus in Seven there are two episodes that feature Vulcans in larger roles.

What role do you think the Vulcans should have played?

I am also watching DS9 for the first time, and am just at Season 3. There was a Vulcan woman in Season 2, I think in the Maquis two-parter. She was trying to buy weapons from Quark.

She was easily the stupidest Vulcan I have ever seen and I wondered if the role was written that way? Was the actor portraying her as an idiot or was she just a really bad actor? If it wasn't done on purpose, her performance is easily the worst I have ever seen in any Star Trek.

Vulcans actually appeared as guest roles on DS9 more than any other Star Trek show.

It's just mainly in small roles - admirals, scientists, et cetera.

There's always 'Take Me Out to the Holosuite' in season seven. Lots of Vulcans in that one. :vulcan:

Just wait for the season 7 episode "Take me out to the holosuite".

It features Vulcans prominently and is one of my favorite DS9 episodes

But apart from there weren't many Vulcans featured in DS9.. for what reason i don't know. I just imagine that there was no need to specifically shine the spotlight on Vulcans because they made no storyline about them.. they were just another Federation race and i'm pretty sure some were stationed on DS9. Just not obviously on important positions to have them show up regularly.

The original brief for TNG was that, as the ship was going to be on a ten year mission away from UFP space, we'd see very few races we already knew, unless they had representatives on the Enterprise-D. as it turned out, we ended up seeing Vulcan crewmembers in the very first episode, Dr Selar in Season Two, plus several others. But they also wanted to avoid comparisons with Spock.

When DS9 was set in Bajoran space, with Ferengi seemingly well-known to Bajorans and Cardassians, it was important to lessen the presence of TOS and TNG UFP member aliens who - as stated in "The last Outpost" and "The Battle" (TNG) - had never seen a Ferengi and known him to be a Ferengi. So in the DS9 region of space, we saw few Vulcans, no Andorians, no Tellarites, etc.

However, keep a look out for "The Maquis" two-parter, the hilarious "Take Me Out to the Holosuite", and "Field of Fire".

FWIW, I've read that when they were cooking up what eventually became the Dominion War storyline, it was almost a war with the vulcans.

Basically, it would have had the Vulcans breaking off from the Federation and the ensuing conflict that would cause.

Might have been interesting, but am glad they went the way they did instead.

If I remember correctly (probably don't) the Vulcan's leaving would have been spurred on by the Leyton coup, which succeeded instead of failing as it did. Vulcans and I guess other members leave in protest and then we have a Federation civil war.

I know of one fan fic writer who went down that path. As in the coup succeeds and there is a civil war. His stuff doesn't focus on the war itself but the aftermath after the war. Unfortunately only one of his stories is readily available.

They probably didn't have many Vulcans because the makeup department already had their hands full making all of the exotic aliens on DS9.

Of course, we can't forget about our favorite Vulcan assasin from Season 7!

Might you have a link for that?

There was a Vulcan Ambassador in The Foresaken, wasn't there? And there was a certain Vulcan we all know and love in Trials & Tribble-ations.

Yeah, for a Vulcan, she seemed pretty thick.

It seems like all of the modern Trek series had a tough time getting Vulcans right. They usually came off arrogant, naive or really anal (or all of the above). I'm kind of glad DS9 didn't use them that often.

In TOS we had two main Vulcans. Not a very large sample of the population to actually state what was "right", especially as Spock was half-human and Sarek married a human, which didn't seem to be a "normal" thing for a Vulcan to do at the time.

Just like some humans are awesome and others are total douches.

Stonn gives Sakonna a run for her money in the moron department. T'Pring was pretty conniving. Vulcans run a gamut of their own, we just got used to the ultra-stoics like Spock and Tuvok.
