DS9-"The Quark Odo Show"

albion432

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Just finishing up the second season and it seems like the main characters are Quark and Odo. I'm surprised at how little Sisko has been featured in the series so far. Anyone else notice this, or is it just me?

Quark and Odo were the two characters that the writers and actors had a handle on right out of the gates, so we saw a lot of them to begin with. Then, by the end of season one, Kira had joined them.

Sisko has more to do during season three, and his transformation is complete by season four. I imagine that, at first, the writers had more fun writing for non-Starfleet main characters, after years of no conflict between the human crew on TNG.

Well I suspect that the writers and Actor had a handle on O'Brien as well.

Quark and Odo were the best characters in a huge part because the actors were amazing. They were probably the 2 strongest characters.

Kira was just a lady with a temper tantrum.

Sisko always looked unhinged, like he was about to go into psychosis.

I partially agree. Odo has his moments but for me, he has let downs. I'd think of it more as The Quark Show - With Worf, Odo, and friends.

The main Starfleet characters, such as Sisko and O'Brien, were kind of limited in how they should behave and what they should say. The other characters--especially civilians like Quark and Garak--had a lot more leeway, so they could offer the writers more creativity in their storylines.

Forgot about O'Brien! Meany was great back in TNG, so his previous establishment there helped him to hit the ground running as well.

In the first couple of seasons, a lot of the conflict centres around how Odo/Kira/Quark adapt to Starfleet administering the station and to the Cardassians withdrawing from Bajor.

Once the Klingon conflict and the Dominion war erupt, you'll see more interesting plots involving the other characters.

Some of the fans never got a handle on Kira's character either. :techman:

It boggles my mind sometimes that some fans think of Kira as 'The angry lady' just because she fought with Sisko a lot in season 1. For a non-human character she showed some of the most humanity in the series.

In some ways the series is her healing process set into motion by Opaka in Battle Lines, learning how to dig her way out of the war mentality and live the life she should have if she hadn't grown up a terrorist.

Still 100% more watchable than The Seven Show - featuring the EMH and Janeway

IMO Kira is the best main character ever created in Trek.
