DS9, The Greatest of All Treks

DS9 is definitely my favourite of the Trek series, and calling it 'pretentious' is definitely rich when the comparison is The Next Generation, three times winner of Most Up Themselves Dramatic Presentation. Don't get me wrong, love some TNG reruns, but they define stiffly starched Star Trek. DS9 had more of the spirit of TOS, to me. Dialogue a bit less affected, characters seem to have real relationships with each other, decisions are made from the heart as often as from the rulebook, flying by the seat of the pants with whatever you had to hand, and a Federation that wasn't always perfect and was sometimes an antagonist themselves. Space was dangerous and complicated, and sometimes it was too much for our heroes and we saw most of them break down at some point or other, and lose their cool. The solution was rarely inverting the polarity of any tachyon emitters, and decisions tended to have consequences. The characters developed and grew, had lasting relationships romantic and familial, and had fun with each other.

DS9 is my favourite series. Loved that it was a little bit different to what came before.
Not to say I don't like all the other series but the mix of characters and story lines in DS9 made it stand just a little of ahead of the rest.

Brooks gets criticised for his acting in it sometimes. I thought he was actually a resounding success in the role. Very human in it, rather than some uncomplicated hero type.

I don't know if it is the greatest of all the Star Trek's but in my own list.....I think I have stopped ranking it 3rd, which says a lot. When it came out I thought it was good enough, but the I have definitely come to appreciate the show more as I get older. Kinda hard to knock TNG from the #1 spot, but DS9 is a pretty close second.

Both TNG and DS9 had their strengths. Both shows are different. I am conflicted. Sometimes TNG is better in my head. Other times DS9 is my favorite. They are my number 1 and 2 shows of all time.

Way to persuasively argue your case.

I argued about Star Trek since the early days of the Usenet (the 1990s), when teh internets still were just a wet dream of some computer nerds. I know the times when you could watch the letters appear on the screen one by one because the speed of the modem was so slow. :) I dont like to repeat myself anymore, so now I boil it down to... "No.". ;)

DS9 is the best of all Trek, we all know it!

Niner and proud :bolian:

It's this arrogance that keeps me out of this forum, for the most part.

As I mentioned in my previus post, I offer the disclaimer that I adore DS9. It is my favourite Trek of all time, although my 'current' fave is usually just the one that I'm watching at the time :)

However, it seems an odd paradox has evolved where Trekkers nearly unanimously consider DS9 'the best,' whilst also considering it 'the underdog.' For the majority of my existence on this planet, there has not been a time where I can recall DS9 being an underdog in any way, shape, or form. It was always the best - especially after it ended and Voyager and its storytelling problems were all we had.

Any suggestion that the 'arcs' aren't amazing and innovative and so on is shot down as blasphemy by a coterie of 'Niners' who are almost obsessive and irrational as the various 'Shippers' were/are over in the Enterprise forum. In the GenTrek forum, 'rank your favour1te episodes!!1!!' threads exist purely so everyone can talk about how wonderful DS9 is, to the expense of whichever show has most raised its ire. It's a little tiresome now.

In a thread called "DS9, The Greatest Of All Treks" you're going to get a lot of people that agree with that statement for whatever reason(s). DS9 has its faults and issues like any show and I'm not saying that I don't like the others, but it is the show that has always resonated with me the most and the one I always return too. If that makes me arrogant then I guess I'm guilty, but in what they managed to do with character development and growth alone makes them far more enjoyable to watch throughout as well as far more relatable (despite most of the main/recurring cast being non-human).

I do apologise if my level of appreciation for a TV show has annoyed you, that was not my intent.

I didn't say you were arrogant. I simply pointed out that saying 'we all know it' is arrogant. That's not even semantics. One is a personality observation, the other is behavioural. I'm sure you're a fine, upstanding citizen who walks with the Prophets etc. :)

Hasn't annoyed me at all, though I'm disappointed you resorted to passive aggression instead of engaging me on the points. I'd still love a discussion on this forum about the nature of DS9's alleged 'arcs' and why they are considered such a glorious achievement in storytelling. But I guess I also don't want to be the prime rib in the dog shelter, so on we go.

I wouldn't call them a glorious achievement, but I would say they were something Trek hadn't done to that point, and didn't particularly do again until ENT S3 some years later.

My favorite aspect of the show is that it has more sexually ambiguous characters than any of the others in the franchise.

I have this internal struggle in my mind because I can't really decide between DS9 or TOS as my favorite Trek. They had different proposals, aired in such different historical contexts and even the model they tell stories are almost opposite to each other. Either way, it's a tie for me.

What always impressed me with DS9 is that they still managed to portray the Utopian future from the ST Universe even when they had the darkest moments from all Trek Series. They took the "There can be no Light without Darkness" concept quite seriously. And like a lot of people say, it's the Trek Series where the characters and the situations described feel more close to our reality.

The backstories of the characters are also the most interesting from all Trek series. You could easily tell 2 or 3 separate prequel stories with all the main characters. DS9 always felt more like a Saga than just a Television Series to me.

As great as DS9 is it does lack a few things. One you don't have KIrk/Spock/McCoy which are the greatest characters in the history of Trek and you don't have Patrick Stewart who is the greatest actor in the history of Trek so I think the debate as to which is best isn't a easy one to answer.
