DS9 is problematic, we need to talk

I mean, this sort of thing goes on in all TV shows, not just Star Trek. I remember one show, where a speaking character asks an extra the time, the extra just holds out their arm so the speaking character can look at the watch himself.

Yeah. This is not new nor particularly egregious in Trek. Money and time are tight in productions with little flexibility.
 
I think that the rules might even apply to cameos. That's why Lee Child didn't do anything other than gesture in "Jack Reacher"

Morn never complained.

Morn was a running joke. Though I do think he deserved a few lines just to compensate him for his time in the makeup chair.
 
It was always most obvious to me on TNG when they'd have an extra at conn who wasn't verbally acknowledging orders the way the regular characters always did.
And when they would set down food/drink in ten forward. Sometimes they would not even look at the main crew guest characters / stars. Or the main crew does not even say thank you. That would seem especially important in this future.
 
Why 45 minutes? I can get it out of the way in 20 seconds!
