DS9 Fans: Who here groans when...

When just about every other sci-fi fan on the internet seems to claim that the star trek franchise sucked after TNG (often using that phrase).

Its down-right ignorant, they probably haven't even bothered to watch DS9 past 'Move along home'.

Your thoughts?

I've actually never heard that... but yeah, it's annoying when someone who hasn't read or watched something whines about it...

For one thing, DS9 began during TNG's reign (OK, it also began after TNG's start). One could also say that TNG ended with "Nemesis" so DS9 is still safe there. :)

Well it's interesting, perhaps (a little like myself) they've never given the shows they didn't grow up with a chance - I can't say I've watched any newer ST's than DS9 - I'd be open to them of course, but I bet there's plenty of folks who wouldn't be, or the type that watch one ep and base their judgement on that!

I groan when fans declare people who don't like what they like as being "ignorant".

Anyway, I think we are all quite hypocritical in this area. With shows we like we say "give more of a chance" but if we don't like a show we'll gladly dropped it after an episode (even after the first 10 minutes) and freely say that the show was rubbish and we gave it enough of a chance.

It was made extremely apparent to me during middle school that my likes and interests weren't exactly popular. I haven't worried about it since.

^ right on - same here. That said, what's the argument if someone did give the show a chance and didn't like it? What exactly entails giving a show a chance?

^^I realized that too, and about the same time realized that I didn't care what other people thought about my likes or interests.

I don't respect someone's opinion unless it's based on something...so if they have 'given it a chance' and honestly don't like it, who am I to criticize?

On a related note, I wonder how much of DS9's appeal comes from an underdog, non-mainstream appeal. There's a paradoxical pride here when DS9 fans cite all these awards and recognition and TIME and TV Guide calling DS9 one of the best sci-fi shows ever, but then another kind of debate that implies you need a special understanding to "get" DS9. If DS9 were more popular in the mainstream, somehow it loses its luster.

I say that as a DS9 fan, don't get me wrong. It's my favorite of all the Trek shows, but there's something weird going on when people talk about its quality.

It may be a case of "all these things are true". One truth does not preclude another, but only adds to the confusion as to which truth is the real McCoy, Jim.
I was a big TNG fan who didn't watch DS9 during it's heyday. There are probably a lot of others like me which is part of that tapestry of truth.
Thinking back, the main reason I didn't get into DS9 then was because it wasn't friendly to the casual viewer. In terms of mass appeal, Roddenberry was right. Keep it episodic. Otherwise the show has a tone of some clique that you don't belong with. The more serialized DS9 became, the less interested I was - not wanting to come into it in the middle of the story. I didn't end up watching the show until 2009, thanks to Netflix.

same here. i worried about it a bit. i was labled, 'the star trek guy'. eventually i decided, well this is who i am and embraced Trek and all things sci-fi.

I love DS9, I liked Voyager too (which i know alot of people disagree with). I think perhaps it is unfair to call someone ignorant for not liking the series. All because we like DS9 doesn't mean that everyone else is going to. although I think it is ignorant for some one to slag the show off if they have never watched....if theres one thing that will annoy me no end is when someone with judge something with out checking it out. I get a lot of abuse at work for being a Trekker....but thats there problem not mine. :P

My feeling is that it is very annoying when people complain about something they know nothing about. Doubly so if they do something like troll another fan group without having watched the show, etc. At the end of the day, it's their loss...but if I have to mod their silliness, then it becomes my problem too.

That said, if someone who has actually watched a show I like doesn't care for it, I couldn't care less. I probably don't like everything they like either. No biggie. :)

To me the equation is quite simple. "Show X is the stupidest thing ever and anyone who likes it is stupid and only what I like is of any value." = Ignorant.

"I don't really like show X and I just don't get it's appeal." = Not Ignorant

DS9 is terrific, available on DVD, and seems respected among critical circles. I can't say there's much to complain about.

Well, okay, the DVD packaging still sucks. Also the fact that it will probably never have a Blu-Ray release, proper or otherwise. But, c'est la vie.

I was friends with someone (a TNG fan) who always referred to it as "Deep Sleep 9" because it was so "boring".

Of course it was so "boring" that she'd hardly seen any of it.

Anyway it made me rather cross.. <enraged emoticon>
