I'd actually recommend picking up Star Trek DS9: Twist of Faith, which is an omnibus containing Avatar books 1 and 2, plus the next two books in the series: Abyss and Demons of Air and Darkness.
I would also recommend Twist of Faith, except that if you want a full explanation for the events in Demons of Air and Darkness, you'll also need to get the NextGen book Doors into Chaos and it's novella sequel The Other Side. But seeing as you're a Picard fan, I don't see you minding the hassle.^ And the novella "Horn and Ivory."

No, I meant because lots of the stories cross over, Like TNG novels will have DS9 story Arcs cross over into them and it's hard to know which ones are required reading and which are not.
