DS9 Avatar Book One

Has anyone read this? I'm thinking of picking it up, I see Picard on the front, does he have much of a part in this story?

That's the first book in the post-finale series of Deep Space Nine novels; it chronicles the beginning of what you can sort of imagine as a "season 8" for the show, introducing several new characters (and at least one old one).

The whole post-finale set of books (often called the "Deep Space Nine Relaunch") is utterly fantastic, and starting it is an idea I wholeheartedly recommend.

Yup, really good book. And you're right; as seems to be the case with every new novel series in the 24th century, Picard is present (i.e. New Frontier, SCE).

fantastic novel and the start of a fantastic series.

Also, Avatar is one of the novels to usher in the current "era" of TrekLit, with tighter continuity between (24th century) TrekLit series.

Highly Recommended :techman:

Yeah, Picard plays a pretty big role in Avatar Book 1. This book, and the post-finale DS9 series as a whole, are just the thing for those who loved DS9 and where saddened to see the show end. It's just fantastic.

I'd actually recommend picking up Star Trek DS9: Twist of Faith, which is an omnibus containing Avatar books 1 and 2, plus the next two books in the series: Abyss and Demons of Air and Darkness. (see below)

I'd highly reccomend checking out the DS9 Post-Finale books, they're the books that really got me into TrekLit.

^ And the novella "Horn and Ivory."
I would also recommend Twist of Faith, except that if you want a full explanation for the events in Demons of Air and Darkness, you'll also need to get the NextGen book Doors into Chaos and it's novella sequel The Other Side. But seeing as you're a Picard fan, I don't see you minding the hassle. ;)

The post-series DS9 stories are generally excellent, and Avatar is a strong beginning. Be aware that Picard does not play a significant role after the opening duology, so I hope you are reading these stories for other reasons as well.

Well, I just meant that 'officially' they are pre-reqs, though beyond one reference so far, there are none regarding ASiT and LoD that I've read in thus far.., but do the events in ASiT relate to Worlds of DS9: Cardassia? I dunno, as I have only read through Horn and Ivory thus far..

Just use a book list, like as psiphi.org or wiki, and with the 5 in ToF, you already have between 1/4 and 1/5 of them, so don't get overwhelmed. :)

It'll be fun, you'll wish there were more. :)

No, I meant because lots of the stories cross over, Like TNG novels will have DS9 story Arcs cross over into them and it's hard to know which ones are required reading and which are not.

Generally speaking, if a novel refers to any other novel, it will give a summary of the events of that novel; nothing should be required reading. If you read all the DS9 relaunch stories in their order, nothing else is actually required.

Some are part of other miniseries like Gateways, yes, but anything relevant from the other books will be summarized in the DS9 book you read.

Trek books these days get a lot of fun out of their shared continuity, but if you're willing to not be a completist, it shouldn't pose any problem for you understanding the stories.

And even if it does, just look on Memory Beta, or just ask here! :)

If something puzzles you, investigate, but the authors are talented and clever enough to realize than any book could be a reader's first exposure to ST fiction, and they add sufficient detail in recaps to get you through.
